When Dvorák wrote his Serenade for 10 winds and 2 lower strings in January 1878, the heyday of the great wind serenades and “Harmoniemusik” wind ensembles was already long gone. He was probably inspired by hearing Mozart's Gran Partita shortly beforehand in Vienna. The home key of d minor here is striking, as is the often serious, even tragic atmosphere that repeatedly darkens the otherwise cheerful mood that is typical of the serenade genre. Perhaps this was a reaction to the death of two of his children just a few months earlier. Despite the work's dramatic character - or perhaps because of it - Dvorák's Serenade was taken up in many European cities soon after its first performance in Prague, and fêted as a significant contribution to the chamber music repertoire for wind instruments. The autograph sources in Prague have been consulted for this Urtext edition. The parts are printed with player-friendly page divisions, perfect page-turning opportunities, and practical alternative parts in F for the three horns.

The work remains widely performed by Wind Octets, making it one of the most significant, substantial works in the wind ensemble repertoire. David Walter's transcription of Serenade in C minor, also known as Serenade No. 12, is for Wind Quintet, making the popular work even more accessible and versatile. Serenade in C minor comprises four movements; 1) Allegro, 2) Andante, 3) Menuet and Trio, and 4) Allegro. The Serenade in D minor, Opus 44 is a chamber composition by Czech composer Antonin Dvorak. It was written in 1879 and was premiered that same year in Prague with the composer as conductor. The work is in four movements: I Moderato, II Minuetto, III Andante & IV Finale-Allegro Molto. The work has an old-world flavor with a Slavonic style throughout. It was originally written for Oboes, Clarinets, Bassoons, Horns, Cello and Double Bass. Mr. Geoffrey Bergler, veteran Trumpeter of the Seattle Symphony has done a brilliant job with his transcription. This work is about 23 minutes in length, for advanced performers.

When writing his Concerto No. 1 in A minor, Op. 33, Camille Saint-Saens created a 'classic' of violoncello literature. But the French musician even wrote other solo works for this instrument: a second concerto, two sonatas, the 'Swan' from 'The Carnival of the Animals' as well as a 'Suite with Piano Accompaniment' Op. 16. Premiered on 27 April 1866 and probably written shortly before, the work is based on the composer's study of tradition, especially of the form of the Baroque suite, integrated in a Romantic tonal language. Many years later (1919) the composer also presented a version with orchestral instead of piano accompaniment, and for this version he replaced movements 3 and 5 and changed the ending of the fourth movement. The present edition contains the text of the orchestral version: The five-movement suite begins with a prelude reminiscent of Bach which is followed by a pleasant serenade, a stylized gavotte and a sentimental romance before a passionate tarantella puts a virtuoso end to the piece. The enthusiastic, melodic 'Suite' is a valuable addition to the cello repertoire, suitable for both tuition and concert purposes.

Georg Goltermann (1824-1898) left a plethora of works for his instrument, including seven cello concertos which still play an important role in the cello literature of today. In addition, he composed a large number of character pieces, including romances, reveries, nocturnes and serenades. Rooted entirely in the romantic spirit of their time with regard to style, they are relatively short pieces of medium difficulty. It is not least due to its melodic and harmonic catchiness that the rather easy Reverie in G minor Op. 92/2 enjoys great popularity both in lessons and in concerts. The expression marking 'Allegro appassionato' refers to the fundamental character of the piece which demands, in particular, an expressive vibrato rich in modulation.

Goltermann (1824-1898) left a plethora of works for his instrument, including seven cello concertos which sometimes go to the limitsof what was considered to be technically playable in his time. Even today, these works have maintained their importance throughout the methodological progress in literature. Apart from the concertos, Goltermann also composed a large number of character pieces, including romances, reveries, nocturnes and serenades. Stylistically wholly rooted in the Romantic spirit of their time, the pieces are relatively short and of medium difficulty as regards the technical demands. It is not least due to their melodic and harmonic catchiness that they enjoy a lasting popularity both in music lessons and in domestic concerts.
