Although Robert Schumann absolutely loved to play a duet he wrote only few works for Piano duet. Created in 1848 Bilder aus dem Osten Op. 66 was one of the best-known and most frequently played works in the Piano duet literature until the 20th century. But the Polonaises Op. 3 by the 18-year-old composer following the example of Franz Schubert and even exceeding him in harmonic boldness and tonal ingenuity already show the self-taught Schumann on the way to his own style. After volume 1 which contains the easier works composed for music teaching purposes volume 2 now contains the charming yet hardly known Ballszenen Op. 109 inaddition to the two above-mentioned works. The new edition of the Wiener Urtext Edition based on the musical text of the New Schumann Complete Edition (edited by Joachim Draheim and Bernhard Appel) provides for the first time a reliable original text based on the sources especially for the 8 Polonaises which had been inadequately edited up to now. The appendix contains the popular Fantasiestücke Op. 73 (originally for Clarinet and Piano) edited by the composer and future Schumann researcher Friedrich Gustav Jansen. The arrangement published in 1851 had been revised and thus been authorized by Schumann himself.

In response to failures Schumann once again turned more to composing during his time in Düsseldorf. He wrote many new works also ones for the Piano for which he had only written a few pieces after his first years ofcomposing.Bach's music played an important role in the Schumanns' house at the time; this is mirrored in the fact that Schumann turned to baroque forms again. However he wanted his fugues to be understood as 'characterpieces just in a stricter form'.The Piano Pieces in Fughetta Form op. 126 published in Henle's catalogue for the first time unite the strict formal demands with romantic expression in a masterly manner.

Robert Schumann …(+)
Clara Wieck’s sincerest wish was that her future husband Robert Schumann turn his extraordinary genius toward the larger and more challenging task of composing orchestral music. Confiding in her diary in 1839 just one year before her marriage she explained that “it would be best if he composed for Orchestra: his imagination cannot find sufficient scope in the Piano…” In the years that followed their marriage Robert Schumann continued to devote much of his attention to Piano music but he also found the time to comply with his beloved Clara’s wish by creating a number of musical pieces composed specifically for Piano andOrchestra. Although Schumann’s genius is most in evidence in his masterful solo Piano compositions and superb lieder his lively and provocative imagination manifests itself with equal aplomb in the works composed for Piano and Orchestra. The same compelling romantic and lyrical qualities that captivate lovers of Schumann’s Piano music are evident in these compositions. Three of his finest are presented here in full score including the A Minor Piano Concerto one of the most popular and frequently performed concertos ever written. All demonstrate his remarkably innovative approach to music diverting substantially from the classic models of the day and display his immense creativity as well as his warmth and sensitivity. Included in this collection of Schumann’s compositions for Piano and Orchestra are: Piano Concerto In A minor Op. 54 (published 1846) Concertstück Op.92 (Introduction and Allegro appassionato; published 1852) Introduction and Allegro Op. 134 (published 1855) These three works by one of the greatest masters of romanticism will delight musicians music lovers and students as well as devotees of Schumann. Pianists will be especially pleased to have these appealing Schumann works in one convenient edition available at

Original Version - Edition for Cello and Piano. Schumann?s Cello Concerto Rediscovered.
In her first Urtext edition for Edition Peters, internationally renowned cellist Josephine Knight reveals Robert Schumann?s original version of his Cello Concerto in A minor Op. 129 ? a piece he actually called a ?Concertstück? ? removing generations of inauthentic editorial interventions. This is the only available modern scholarly edition of the work as Schumann originally conceived it, and restores the text from October 1850, based on the composer?s manuscript held in the Biblioteka Jagiello?ska in Kraków. It is presented in a beautifully printed edition for cello with Schumann?s original piano reduction. Matching orchestral material is also available from the publisher.
Only modern Urtext edition based on Schumann?s original 1850 manuscript Many new corrections and clarifications, especially to the cello part Scholarly preface detailing history of the work and this edition by editor Josephine Knight, Piatti Professor of Cello at the Royal Academy of Music London Cello Part contains Josephine Knight's fingering and bowing suggestions Critical Commentary Matching orchestral material available separately from Edition Peters Recording of the Concertstück featuring Josephine Knight available from Dutton
Robert Schumann?s tragic last years have mired many of his greatest works in unnecessary doubt. The story of the suppression of his Violin Concerto by well-meaning friends is relatively well-known. Few, however, know that the version of the Cello Concerto that is routinely heard today is so far from Schumann?s original conception of the work ? not only in details of phrasing and articulation, but also featuring a different ending with a bold final flourish from the cello. Composed in a burst of inspiration in two weeks in October 1850 shortly after he and Clara had moved to Düsseldorf, Schumann (who in 1850 was still in good health) never heard the piece performed. In an effort to promote a performance of the work, he gave the score to the cellist Robert Emil Bockmühl. Bockmühl made revisions that Schumann resisted, and the hoped-for performance never happened. Schumann?s health failed and he died aged just 46 in 1856. The Concerto, in an already substantially revised form, was premiered in 1860 but it was not given significant recognition until it was championed by Pablo Casals in the 20th century by which time (and since) the text for the work had accreted additions and alterations from generations of soloists.
Now Josephine Knight, Piatti Professor of Cello at the Royal Academy of Music, London has returned to the original 1850 manuscript of the work, which is in the Biblioteka Jagiello?ska in Kraków, to reveal Schumann?s original thoughts for the first time in a modern Urtext edition. The edition reflects Schumann?s original conception of the work as a Concertstück and restores Schumann?s musical text, free of posthumous interventions. It is presented in a beautifully printed edition for cello, with Schumann?s original piano reduction. Matching orchestral material is also available from the publisher.
?My ultimate wish,? says the editor, ?is to give performers both access to, and confidence that they are playing from, an edition which is a true representation of the piece in its original form, no matter how much more difficult this might be. I found that incorporating the changes enabled the piece to take on a completely different character ? one that is lighter and happier, even ?cheerful?, as Schumann himself described the work.?

Clara Schumann's Piano Notebook. This book presents seven piano solos that represent the wonderful variety of compositions by Clara Schumann. The brilliant ?Polonaise? was composed and performed by Clara as a child prodigy. The enchanting ?Prelude, Op. 16, No. 2?, and ?Romance, Op. 21. No.2? are both beautiful and suitable for many occasions. The joyful ?Mazurka? makes a great recital piece as well as ?Scherzo? in C minor. ?Nocturne in F, Op. 6, No. 2" is one of the most beautifully written nocturnes. Chopin once told Clara that she was the only woman in Germany that could play his music. She may have been inspired to compose this piece after performing many of Chopin's works in her concerts. The final piece in this collection of Clara Schumann?s Piano Notebook is her ?Theme and Variations?, which she dedicated to Robert Schumann. Robert composed and published many variations of his own on Clara's theme. Her own variations remained unknown until recently. These variations are very interesting, and the theme is easily recognizable throughout. ?Theme and Variations? truly showcases Clara?s unique sense of creativity. These piano selections are presented as examples of Clara Schumann's legacy?a great composer of the 19th century. Her music is timeless and must be preserved for future generations of pianists. This collection will be valuable for recitals, programs and your own enjoyment.

Robert Schumann was fascinated by the Violin virtuoso Nicolò Paganini as were many composers of the time. When he was planning a Piano tutor in 1832/33 that was to include his own works as well as those byothers Schumann took a close look at Paganini’s virtuosic Caprices for Violin. Schumann’s own Caprices Op. 3 were composed in this spirit based very closely on Paganini’s original andfollowing their educational intention. Opus 10 on the other hand deals more freely with the model and is designed more with an effective performance in mind. Our Urtext edition of all of the PaganiniStudies is supplemented by the composer’s extensive explanation on their execution which he placed at the beginning of his Opus 3.
