Franz Liszt transformed this intimate song into a dramatic declaration that reaches its powerful climax at the phrase ?Mein guter Geist mein bess?res Ich? using chords to be played con somma passione. In Liszt?s autograph the melody is overlaid by the song text but he changes the title to ?Liebeslied?. The first edition published in Leipzig in 1848 retainedthis heading and thus the song is still known today under two different titles. In collaboration with Liszt scholar Mária Eckhardt Henle Verlag presents this best-known of all of Liszt?s Schumann arrangements in a reliable HenleUrtext quality edition.

This volume presents easy pieces for piano by great virtuosos. It unites the two greatest, and perhaps best-known, pianists of the 19th century, Frédéric Chopin and Franz Liszt. The technical requirements of these works are very moderate without muting the stylistic characteristics of these two composers. The ability to play an original composition by Liszt in the first years of lessons can be very motivating for the piano student. Also featured in this collection are works by the virtuoso Ferdinand Hiller, to whom Robert Schumann dedicated his Piano Concerto. As in many of the works by Liszt and Chopin, Hiller's works are frequently reminiscent of folk music. Robert Schumann's 'Album for the Young' is one of the milestones of educationally inspired Piano literature. This edition does not focus on systematic technical studies but on the development of the player's musical performance as well as on the realisation of musical associations. In this progressively structured work the pieces 'Für Kleinere' [For the Younger Ones] are followed by a second section 'Für Erwachsenere' [For the More Grown-Ups] which both technically and intellectually leaves the world of the childlike behind again and again (e.g. Mignon). This in particular provides a great set of repertoire for adults who wantto resume Piano playing which gives extra relavence to Schumann's opus. The appendix of the revised new edition of the Wiener Urtext Edition also contains pieces originally intended for the album which ultimately were not included in the printed collection. The music section is complemented by the composer's 'Musikalische Haus- und Lebensregeln' which had already been integrated in the first reprints including their original translations into English and French the latter of which was written by none other than Franz Liszt.

(Version for piano solo) and other works. Supplementary Volume 15 of the New Liszt Edition contains both earlier versions of published works and also several works that remained as manuscript. The most extensive work in this volume is the earliest known draft of the Piano Concerto in A major (written in 1839 for solo piano). Not only does the draft give insight into the process of the work?s genesis, but it also holds its own as a work for piano solo. Additionally, the volume contains several shorter works, such as a piano transcription of Robert Schumann?s Lied Widmung, which shows how original Liszt?s interpretations were, and also two early drafts of the Zweite Elegie dedicated to Lina Ramann (a former pupil of Liszt?s and his first biographer). The latter have been published in facsimile. Supplementary Volume 15 features a detailed preface in German, English and Hungarian, which reveals valuable details on each work. The cloth-bound version also has critical notes in English.

Composed during 1836-38 this work is dedicated to Franz Liszt who in turn dedicated his B minor Sonata to Schumann. It reflects Schumann's despair over his thwarted love affair with Clara Wieck.

The large and technically demanding G major Sonata was composed two years before Schubert?s death in October 1826 and is one of only three piano sonatas that appeared in print during his lifetime. The unusual title of the first edition ?Fantasie, Andante, Menuetto und Allegretto? stems from the publisher Haslinger and is probably due to the dreamy-melancholy underlying mood of the first movement which corresponded little to the traditional concepts of a sonata?s first movement. It is hardly surprising that the ?Fantasy-Sonata?, as it is often still called today, later inspired artists such as Franz Liszt and Robert Schumann with its free and romantic nature, who described it as being consummate ?in form and spirit?. For the present Urtext edition a thorough re-examination of all known sources was undertaken, including the autograph in the British Library, and the edition now presents itself with the usual crystal clear Henle music engraving. The preface by Schubert expert Andrea Lindmayr-Brandl and the detailed commentary section provide comprehensive information about the genesis of the work, the sources and their readings. A further highlight are the fingerings by pianist Martin Helmchen.
