Ralph Vaughan Williams: Fantasia On Greensleeves: Violin: Instrumental Work

This Fantasia is founded on the following traditional English carols: The Truth Sent From Above (Herefordshire) words and tune; Come All You Worthy Gentlemen (Somerset) words and tune; On Christmas Night (Sussex) words and tune; There Is A Fountain (Herefordshire) tune only; together with fragments of other well-known carol tunes. The work is scored for ordinary full Orchestra with Organ and set of bells (ad lib.) or String Orchestra with Organ or Piano. Alternatively it may be accompanied by Organ or Piano alone played from the Vocal score with an optional solo Cello part (H212). A chorus part for performance bysolo Baritone and TTBB is also available (W41). The chorus is required to sing in four different ways:1. Singing the words.2. Singing with closed lips.3. This is the original orchestral version of Vaughan Williams´ famous fantasia which first appeared in his opera 'Sir John in Love'. Apart from the main folk-tune 'Greensleeves' the centre section uses another folk-tune entitled 'Lovely Joan'. This version adapted and arranged by Ralph Greaves has been popular in the concert hall and in recordings since it first appeared.Now out of print in the Oxford University Press catalogue this work has been newly engraved and reissued in this Goodmusic edition but otherwise unaltered.

Grade 3?4This piece combines the simple elegant thematic material of the Elizabethan church composer Tallis expanded and modernized through the luxurious harmonies of Vaughan Williams. Jamin Hoffman\'s lush settingis adapted and re-scored from the original version for two string orchestras plus solo quartet. Vaughan Williams began this work - his earliest known piece for a solo instrument with orchestra - in 1896 shortly after returning to the Royal College of Music to study composition with Stanford and completed it in 1904. After his death the manuscript was donated to the British Library and it was here that the pianist Mark Bebbington rediscovered it in 2010 subsequently recording it for Somm Records. The work shows influences of late nineteenth-century composers but also hallmarks of Vaughan Williams's later style and maturity. As such it offers a fascinating glimpse into the composer's development as well as being a powerful work in its own right. My Ladye Greensleeves is one of the most famous and well-loved British folk melodies. A popular legend has attributed the tune to King Henry VIII but in reality it is unlikely to have been written by him and probably dates from the Elizabethan era. It has remained popular for over four centuries and has been arranged many times most famously by Ralph Vaughan Williams in his Fantasia on Greensleeves.My Ladye Greensleeves has been arranged for SATB chorus by Norman Stone.
