Along with Symphonies Nos. 79 and 81, Haydn’s D-minor Symphony Hob. I:80 belongs to a set of symphonies that he completed in late 1784. He wrote them for his employer Prince Nikolaus Esterházy, his task being to entertain the prince with new music. The symphonies had to be suitable for the twenty-five to thirty musicians who were in the prince’s orchestra. Continuing the cooperation between Bärenreiter and the G. Henle publishing company regarding Haydn’s large choral works, operas and symphonies, this edition is based on the G. Henle Complete Edition of the “Works of Joseph Haydnâ€.Bärenreiter has already published the complete performance material for several “Sturm und Drang†symphonies and all the London and Paris symphonies.

This work, possibly commissioned by Prince-Bishop Sigismund Christoph von Schrattenbach , was assigned to three Salzburg composers: W. A. Mozart (part 1), Michael Haydn (part 2), and Anton Cajetan Adlgasser (part 3). Only the manuscript of part 1 has survived. Here Mozart drew heavily on the Salzburg tradition of church music and school dramas, perhaps taking Johann Ernst Eberlin and even his father Leopold as his models. The first performance took place in the Knights' Hall of the prince's palace on 12 March 1767. The libretto was supplied by Ignaz Anton Weiser (1701-1785), town councillor and mayor of Salzburg . Mozart wrote out many of the appoggiaturas in this early work, thereby providing a useful guide to the vocal practices of his day. Aria no. 2 has come down to us with an instructive passage in which the vocal part is ornamented in the hand of Leopold Mozart. The piano reduction, by K.-H. Muller , was prepared on the basis of the New Mozart Edition. The piano part is uncluttered and easy-to-play.

Johann Joseph Rösler (1771–1812) was a composer, conductor and pianist who was active in Prague and Vienna. Later he was in the service of Prince Franz Joseph von Lobkowitz. His Piano Concerto No. 2 in E-flat major of 1803 is a fitting companion to the piano concertos of Beethoven; indeed, his first Piano Concerto in D major was mistakenly attributed to Beethoven until 1925.Now Rösler’s second Piano Concerto is appearing in print for the first time. This is due to editor Alena Hönigová discovering and identifying an autograph score which is the only preserved source in the Prague Conservatory archive. In this Urtext edition Hönigová takes into account the distinctive features of Rösler’s handwriting and the division of parts in the score, as befits the performance practice of his day.

“Rodrigo†was premiered in autumn 1707 in Florence and is therefore one of Handel’s early stage works. The composer, only 22 years old, wrote a densely-woven musical scenario for his first opera composed in Italy . It masterfully portrays the dramatic states of mind of the protagonists surrounding the Iberian tyrant Rodrigo and the plot full of deception, betrayal , adultery, war as well as the transformation wrought by Rodrigo’s abdication. The work was not, as was long thought, a commission from the Prince of Medici. Despite this, “ Rodrigo†seems to have been so popular that Handel extended his stay in Italy and was able to compose several operas during the following period. In “ Rodrigo†, the mastery which made Handel’s succeeding opera “ Agrippina†such a success, is already clearly evident . “ Agrippina†consequently made Handel’s name famous throughout Europe and soon led to his first journey to London . The new vocal score is based on Volume II/2 of the “Halle Handel Edition†(BA 4083). The appendix contains the surviving variants in the versions of the first performances from Handel’s lifetime.

Haydn's three Symphonies nos. 90-92 might rightly be dubbed his “Paris Symphonies Part II,†as they were commissioned in 1788/89, likewise by the Société Olympique, for which Haydn had already composed his six “Paris Symphonies†nos. 82-87 just a few years earlier. Ironically enough, Haydn would later sell these three a second time to Prince von Oettingen-Wallerstein who requested he “receive 3 new symphonies from him.†Regardless of such mercantile entanglements, Haydn shows himself to be at the full height of his mastery as a symphonist in these works. Completed in 1788 according to the autograph manuscript, the Symphony in E flat major no. 91 astonishes, even for Haydn’s standards, with its many idiosyncrasies, such as the Baroque, contrapuntal theme of the first movement or the strings of trills in the slow variation movement. This study edition adopts the musical text of the Haydn Complete Edition, thereby guaranteeing the highest scholarly quality. An informative preface and a brief Critical Report make the handy scorean ideal companion for all current and soon-to-be Haydn fans.

It originated in 1939 in Paris in response to the outbreak of World War II and was intended for outdoor performance. The libretto, by Jirà Mucha, contains references to the Bible. This study score adopts the musical text from the Bohuslav Martinu Complete Edition, Volume VI/2/2. Haydn’s Symphony in G major Hob. I:81 comes from a series of three symphonies completed in late 1784 (nos. 81, 80 and 79, presumably in that order). No autograph score survives for Hob. I:81, thus our Urtext edition is based on copyists’ manuscripts and first editions. As with so many of his symphonies, Haydn wrote this one to provide new music for his employer, Prince Nikolaus Esterházy.Continuing the collaboration between Bärenreiter and the G. Henle publishing company regarding Haydn’s large-scale choral works, operas and symphonies, this edition is based on the G. Henle Complete Edition of the Works of Joseph Haydn. In Die Last-tragende Liebe oder Emma und Eginhard (1728) several strands and levels of plot are interwoven in complex fashion. The serious is intertwined with the comic, affairs of state with the individually human. People of high rank and lower rank communicate with each other, one group perfectly understanding the language of the other and even capable of speaking it if necessary.Charlemagne, emerging victorious from a war, learns that his daughter Emma and his secretary Eginhard have fallen in love with each other. As Emperor, Charlemagne, pressed by his wife Fastrath, has to oppose this relationship, but as a loving father he comes into conflict, as Emma has to decide between her love or a marriage befitting her social standing. In addition to this, Emma is wooed by Prince Heswin who in turn is loved by Emma’s friend Hildegard. The servant Barbara, who is pursued by the factotum Urban, is in love with Eginhard, but it is Steffen, the commentator on everything, who succeeds in winning her.Telemann’s highly complex music, expressive and emotional, artistic and stylish, is suited to each and every situation and level – “an incomprable masterpiece by Herr Telemann who is never praised enoughâ€, as the printed libretto stated.
