Par BARTOK BELA. The editor has selected seventeen of the the forty-two pieces in the 1909 version of Béla Bartók?s seminal work, For Children, Volume One. These selections were chosen as a result of the editor?s teaching experiences with this music: pieces that are both pedagogically advantageous for the teacher, and the most enjoyed by students. Although Bartók?s intention was to write a set of pieces for young people, the charm and depth of these masterful works makes them equally appealing to students of all ages and levels. For Children has been played in concert and recorded by great pianists such as György Sándor, Zoltán Kocsis, Géza Anda, Menahem Pressler, and June de Toth. Long before his famous Mikrokosmos Bartók composed a comprehensive collection of little piano pieces entitled For Children. Written in 1908 1911 its two volumes are based on Hungarian and Slovakian folk tunes respectively. Bothare organised in ascending difficulty from simple two-part pieces to Impressionistic miniatures and they offer everything that children’s hands can manage. Bartók revised this collection in the 1940s. He did not just makemusical improvements but also gave every movement a title. This revised version forms the main text of our Urtext edition while an appendix offers movements from the early version that diverge significantly from the revisedones. As always in Henle’s Bartók editions there are indications regarding performance practice and insights into how the composer himself played these pieces.

Par PART ARVO. ‘I went to nursery school every day until the end of secondary school!’ Arvo Pärt says and pauses, staring slyly at his listener. ‘My mother worked at a nursery school in Rakvere, and I always went to visit her after my lessons.’ There, the future composer often sat at the piano and played or improvised for his little friends. Arvo Pärt is a composer best known for his 'tintinnabuli' compositions. It is a lesser-known fact that in his earlier years as a composer, he also wrote children's songs and piano pieces along with music for plays and animated films. This volume, 'Songs from Childhood', contains a selection of Arvo Pärt's music for children from the period 1956-1970. In those years he was involved with several children's studios and theatres as the piano accompanist and composer. Most of his music for children came about by way of improvisation in rehearsals and was only later completed and put on paper. These pieces therefore retain all the spontaneity and playful spirit in which they were created. 'Songs from Childhood' includes a CD of the same name, providing recordings of the songs with new and colourful instrumental accompaniments in the roiginal Estonian language for your enjoyment. These new accompaniments, which are also included as backing tracks on the CD, were arranged by the composer Tauno Aints in collaboration with Arvo Pärt. Bartók is regarded as one of the most important composers of the 20th century. He became famous both as a music teacher and as an ethnomusicologist. Aulos to a certain degree continues Orbán's easy piano pieces for children, which he composed for Ágnes Lakos's piano tutor and which Editio Musica Budapest published in a separate volume entitled Enchanted Forest in 2011 (Z. 14742). Yet on this occasion the composer took on something which was both significantly different and more than his earlier pieces for children. On the one hand, he did not compose for beginners but for more advanced students who have studied piano for at least three years. On the other, he did not set developing the technique of piano playing as an aim, rather a systematic presentation of different polyphonic genres and compositional procedures (imitation, fugue, stretto, inversion, augmentation and diminution, double counterpoint, latent polyphony, double and triple fugue, cantus firmus technique, etc.). Orbán introduces his students to the mysteries of polyphony in a direct and practical manner, and thus actually makes them familiar with the art of composition.The educational use of the series is significantly increased by the fact that before each piece the composer presents and clarifies with demonstrative illustrations the polyphonic procedure he introduces. Orbán's explanations are not text-book-like at all, but are deliberately personal and subjective, full of lessons and individual associations taken from his practice as a composer. They were written in the same spirit as the works themselves - while they perfectly fulfil their educational purpose they are equally individual, witty and inspired pieces of music that are a joy to play. / Piano

26 Easy Pieces-The volume 'Klassik für Kinder' provides young Flute players with a selection of 26 easy works for lessons and concerts. The selected pieces range from the Baroque era via the Classical period to the Romantic era. Apart from original pieces the editors have deliberately included easy arrangements of well-known masterpieces as well in order to facilitate access to the classical concert literature. The pitch range found in the pieces (not higher than E) can be easily mastered by pupils from the second year of tuition. The collection is particularly suitable to work on various aspects of interpretation and musical performance.
