The Harmonium School (Op. 5) was written by Ernst Stapf and first published in German as Praktische Anleitung zum Harmonium-Spiel. It is a practical guide to playing the Harmonium (or American Reed Organ) and a rare example of the wide range of method books that were published during the heyday of the instrument in the latter part of the 1800s and the early 1900s.Stapf wrote few works that have survived to this day but is perhaps best known as the arranger and editor of a popular series entitled the Harmonium Album in which he gave simple one- and two-manual arrangements of classic works by the greatcomposers including Beethoven Bach and Handel.

Je suis honoré d'écrire quelques mots à propos d'un des plus grands pianistes, Kenny Barron. Il a été une figure importante de la scène New Yorkaise durant quarante ans et il fait partie de l'élite des pianistes de jazz dans le monde.
J'ai tout d'abord rencontré Mr Barron en 1977 dans un haut lieu du duo piano/basse, au Bradley's, dans Greenwich Village. Je l'ai entendu à Cincinnati (dans la ville où j'habitais) en 1974 avec le Quartette de Yusef Lateef et fus très impressionné. Au Bradley's, il était chaleureux et a été très encourageant avec moi, pianiste de 21 ans récemment arrivé à Big Apple (New York). Le moment venu, il me laissa m'asseoir avec son bassiste, le grand Buster Williams - ce fut un réel plaisir.
Lorsque j'ai commencé à réaliser des CD pour le bénéfice de Classical Action : Performing Arts Against AIDS, dans le début des années 90, je lui ai demandé de participer au second enregistrement Fred Hersch and Friends : The Duo Album en jouant un duo avec moi. Cette organisation collecte des fonds vraiment nécessaires pour les services de personnes atteintes du Sida et la prévention. Kenny, sans attendre, donna de son temps et joua magnifiquement. Nous avons également joué à deux pianos à New York au Town Hall et deux fois au Jazz Standard, pour mon plus grand plaisir. C'est un partenaire merveilleux et compréhensif, disposé à tout essayer. Bien qu'il soit difficile de l'identifier, et je ne veux le mettre dans aucune sorte de boîtes, je perçois son style comme étant en grande partie influencé par McCoy Tyner (les lignes longues et claires) et Tommy Flanagan (le phrasé et l'utilisation de l'espace). Il a réussi à obtenir le statut rare de maître du jazz par la vertu de sa longévité, sa profondeur et sa musicalité. Nous partageons tous les deux une passion pour la musique de Monk, Strayhorn et de l'American Popular Songbook et nous sommes tous les deux de grands partisans de l'idée de rendre ce que nous avons absorbé en enseignant aux jeunes pianistes et en devenant leurs mentors.
En plus, il a une personnalité chaleureuse et engageante - il est d'un grand soutien, a un grand sens de l'humour et une attitude posée. Par FAURE GABRIEL. Gabriel Faure 's Nocturnes, nos. 1-8. Gabriel Faure was born in Pamiers (Ariège) on 12 May 1845. Owing to his precocious musical gifts, he was able, at the age of nine, to enter the celebrated Niedermeyer School, founded in Paris to train organists and choirmasters. For about ten years he received instruction of great quality, centred mainly on the study of sacred music and the great classic masterpieces, into which he was initiated notably by Camille Saint-Saë ns, his Piano teacher. As soon as he left the school, Faure began a brilliant career as an organist. In 1896 he succeededTheodore Dubois as an organist at the Church of the Madeleine in Paris, and was appointed professor of composition at the Conservatory, where his pupils included Ravel, Koechlin, Enesco and Schmitt. Meanwhile, he had met Liszt in Weimar and had been initiated into Wagner's art, which, however, never really influenced him. Appointed director of the Conservatory in 1905 after Theodore Dubois' resignation, a member of the French Institute and music critic, Faure spent his last years in solitude, suffering from an irreversible deafness that obliged him to resign from the Conservatory in 1920. He died in Paris on 4 th November 1924. The music of this sometimes misunderstood composer who wrote in nearly all genres (except Organ music) is of great refinement. An enemy of bombast, Faure put his elegant counterpoint, a highly individual harmonic style, unpredictable turns of phrase, and the secret of an unusual musical sensitivity at the service of music that is both varied and of very high quality./ Répertoire / Piano
