Nicolai Mass-The name of the ?Missa Sancti Nicolai? refers to the composition of the Mass for St. Nicholas Day in 1772. Every year on this day a Mass was held in honor of the Prince of Esterházy who shared his name-day with St. Nicholas.It is thought that Haydn wrote this composition specifically to thank the Prince for allowing him to return to Eisenstadt. Some years later trumpet and timpani parts were added to the work.As with the ?Great Organ Mass? these additional parts were not actually written by Haydn himself but simply authorized by him. He seems to have asked his friend Joseph Haydn to write a festive “thankoffering” in the form of a Mass for the famous pilgrimage church of Mariazell in Styria. Haydn began the work in 1782 and recently the original parts to the Missa Cellensis were found in the organ loft of the splendid baroque church at Mariazell.Haydn’s “Mariazellermesse” has always been one of his most popular works. The Utrecht Te Deum was first performed on 7th July 1713 at the thanksgiving service in St Paul's Cathedral London for the Treaty of Utrecht which concluded the War of Spanish Succession. This is an updated edition of Francis Poulenc's 1957 work Sonata For Flute And Piano, edited by Carl Schmidt.
