SSA [TB ad lib.] and String Quartet [Double Bass ad lib.]-Missa Popularis for Choir [SSA (TB ad lib.)] (Lat.) and String Quartet (Double Bass ad lib.)As the name suggests the Missa Popularis has its musical roots in folk music.This becomes clear in the very first bars of the Kyrie where the vVolin plays a melody in the style of a Swedish folk tune above a Bass Ostinato. The musical charm of the Mass derives from the combination of Choir [SSA(TB)] and String Quartet.The choral parts enable performances by female choir or mixed choir. Mårten Jansson is internationally known, particularly for his masses; the Missa brevis in E-flat minor and the Missa Popularis are regularly performed in concert programmes.The new Missa Brevis Arosiensis is stylistically connected with these masses. Due to its moderate technical difficulty, manageable length and overall positive mood, it can be tackled even by amateur choirs. The mass was commissioned for the Mariakören, the choir of the Västerås cathedral, Sweden. The title Arosiensis refers to this city.
