Containing themes of divine providence, rescue, and sustenance, this collection comes from the heart of Joncas’s own suffering due to a bout with Guillain-Barré syndrome. After his recovery, Joncas experienced a new surge of musical creativity that gave birth to In the Sight of the Angels. The lush sounds of choral singing and the elaborate instrumentation of brass, harp, flute, organ, and other instruments make In the Sight of the Angels a beautiful recording replete with psalm settings, including “Drink in the Richness of God,” “In the Sight of the Angels,” and “Till the End of My Days.” Also present are settings of the three New Testament Lukan infancy canticles—the “Canticle of Zechariah,” the “Canticle of Mary,” and the “Canticle of Simeon.” But, perhaps most appropriate in light of Joncas’s recent experiences are the songs delineating the work of the Holy Spirit, God’s breath (ruach): “All Who Are Led by the Spirit,” “Lord, Send Out Your Spirit,” and “Veni, Sancte Spiritus.” This tranquil recording has a pastoral feel. It is tender and depicts a merciful God who gives us hope in light of suffering. Joncas’s newfound wisdom resonates through this music. It is his sincere wish that those who sing it, play it, and/or hear it will grow closer to God. CONTENTS: Veni, Sancte Spiritus • Till the End of My Days • All Who are Led by the Spirit • At Jesus' Name • Canticle of Mary • Lord, Send Out Your Spirit • Psalm 34: Drink in the Richness of God • To the Ends of Earth • Canticle of Zechariah • In the Sight of Angels • Canticle of Simeon.

Michael Joncas’s collection, Deep and Lasting Peace, is as rich as it is varied. Here you’ll find festive settings of great hymns scored for congregations, choir, brass, and organ incorporating Joncas’s original texts. Simple settings of the three gospel canticles found in Luke utilize a “psalm tune” while another setting of the Magnificat is ideal for festive occasions. Responding to frequent requests, Joncas has revised the Gloria from his Psallite Mass casting it in a “festive” setting using a refrain format augmented by brass as well as in a “ferial” setting for everyday Sunday use with two woodwinds and guitar. Not to be missed is the title track “Deep and Lasting Peace,” which is sure to enter mainstream congregational Communion repertoire. For an in-depth look at some of the pieces featured in Deep and Lasting Peace, click on the video below. GIA Senior Editor Michael Silhavy sits down with Michael Joncas to discuss what makes this new collection special. CONTENTS: Psallite Gloria • One People, Here, We Gather • God Creating, God Sustaining • Deep and Lasting Peace • Gospel Canticle of Zechariah • In Christ We Come to Offer Thanks • Gospel Canticle of Mary • Drawn by His Word • Gospel Canticle of Simeon • A Place Called Home • My Soul Gives Glory to the Holy One • O Sacrament Most Holy • Psallite Gloria (Festival Edition).

As one of the three canticles from the New Testament, the Magnificat - the Canticle of Mary - has at all times held a prominent position in church music. Telemann's setting of Luther's German translation of the text bears eloquent witness both to the composer's rich imagination and to his ability to mold a variety of musical shapes into a coherent formal Baroque architecture. Four solo movements with colorfully contrasting instrumentation are juxtaposed with four emphatically homogeneous choral movements; all of the latter are in 6/8 meter and in motet setting with instruments doubling colla parte. Particularly the choral movements are characterized by lively text portrayal and a wealth of at times dramatic imagery. A work of exceptional magnetism for both listeners and choir singers! Score and part available separately - see item CA.3912200.

From the music of the Buena Vista Social Club to Gloria Estefan, the lyrical melodies and infectious rhythms of Cuban music have become embedded in U.S. culture. With Caminemos con Jesús / Let Us Walk with Jesus, composer Tony Alonso presents a groundbreaking collection of liturgical music that calls on his own Cuban musical heritage to provide new ways of singing the liturgy in Spanish, English or bilingually. The first project of its kind, Caminemos con Jesús not only utilizes rich Cuban idioms but also explores what style and musical form can teach us about praying together across cultural and linguistic boundaries. The dynamic call-and-response form that is a hallmark of traditional Cuban music makes these songs especially compelling choices for bilingual worship, allowing assemblies to learn, internalize, and pray easily in both Spanish and English. “Qué Alegría Cuando Me Dijeron / I Rejoiced When I Heard Them Say” uses the words of the psalm as a rhythmic mantra, creating a fresh and engaging way to gather as the Body of Christ. “Letanía a la Madre de las Américas / Litany of Mary of The Americas,” invokes the Mary of many names and nations with a simple yet strong response that will enliven Marian feasts throughout the year. The gentle simplicity of “Tres Guajiros / Three Peasants” re-imagines the story of the Magi as humble peasants bringing gifts of the land to honor the newborn Jesus. Also, in this collection and for the first time in published form, is Gloria Estefan’s “Caridad,” a powerful and poetic prayer to Our Lady of Charity, the patroness of Cuba. All of the pieces of this collection focus on the importance of bringing the voices of the assembly to the forefront while the arrangements are skillfully crafted to be accessible to musicians of all abilities. In addition to the spiral-bound edition, individual octavos, and flute and brass parts, Caminemos con Jesús offers a special edition featuring parts for guitar, percussion and other instruments central to Cuban music. The studio recording is a stunning source of prayer and inspiration, produced in Miami by Grammy Award winner Juan Delgado and featuring some of the finest Cuban-American musicians today. GIA Publications, Inc. is committed to responding to the rich diversity of the contemporary Church. With Caminemos con Jesús, we offer you our very best bilingual music for the liturgical year. “The music of my father’s Cuban homeland has been the language of my heart for as long as I can remember. These songs infuse that rich tradition with the unique sabor of my own experience as a Cuban-American in a distinctly liturgical shape that I hope will inspire others in their daily camino con Jesús.” –Tony Alonso Featuring “Live Mercy, Be Holy / Vive la Misericordia, Vive la Santidad,” the 2020 Los Angeles Religious Education Congress theme song! The Two Songs on American Poems were composed in late May and early June of 2011 by candlelight at my rustic waterfront cabin on a remote island off the northwest coast of Washington State. It was in this locale that I havecompleted a number of works over the years, including the Lux Aeterna, O Magnum Mysterium, Nocturnes, Canticle/O Vos Omnes and others. Prayer was written in memory of Michael Jasper Gioia, Dana and Mary Gioia's infant son, whosebrief life was tragically ended by SIDS.Mr. Gioia served as Chair of the National Endowment for the Arts from 2003-2010 and has authored several books of poems, numerous anthologies, articles, essays and two opera libretti. Amonghis many awards are the American Book Award and Presidential Citizens Medal. He currently holds the Judge Widney Chair of Poetry and Public Policy at the University of Southern California. Sure on this Shining Night was originallycomposed as a choral piece, the third movement of my Nocturnes on poems by Rilke, Neruda and Agee. Rod Gilfry, an international star of opera, recital and musical theater, premiered the mixed duet version with his daughter, Carin,in 2009. He is Professor of Vocal Studies at the USC Thornton School of Music. Both he and Mr. Gioia are national treasures. The Two Songs are designed as a pair but may be sung independently - when paired, Sure On This ShiningNight should begin immediatelyfollowing the final, sustained chord of Prayer with no break in between the songs. Both of these songs, premiered by Mr. Gilfry accompanied by the composer at a USC Visions & Voices tribute to DanaGioia on September 27, 2011, have their roots in the American musical theater and should be sung as such.

The service of Compline derives its name from the Latin word completorium meaning “completion.” It is a prayer of quietness and reflection, and is most effective following the completion of one’s daily work. Compline is perhaps the easiest prayer to add to your daily prayer life as it takes place right before bedtime. As Nighttime Falls is an attempt to bring the richness of Compline Prayer to a wider audience. This collection contains one complete compline service for each day of the week. Each prayer lasts about 15–20 minutes and includes an introduction, an examination of conscience, a hymn, psalmody, a scripture reading, a responsory, the Canticle of Simeon, a concluding prayer, and a blessing. Finally, each day concludes with the beautiful antiphon to the Blessed Virgin Mary, “Salve Regina.” As Nighttime Falls can be used to end youth retreats, Marriage Encounter weekends, parish missions, and other evening events. The companion 2-CD set contains seven complete compline services, one for each night of the week. You can pray in solitude just before going to sleep using the recording of As Nighttime Falls. It can also be used in communities when no pastoral musician is available. The enchanting Celtic charm of the hymn selections and psalms in this collection will engage you and draw you into this rich tradition of the church. At the end of each day let As Nighttime Falls offer you a way to give gratitude for the beauty and wonder of God.

With a duration of about 10 minutes, Schubert's Magnificat D 486 in C major is one of the more concise settings of the well-known Marian canticles, originally for the service of Vespers. It was composed in late summer 1815, and is therefore probably one of a series of church music works Schubert wrote in his youth for Lichtenthal Parish Church. The work requires a large-scale orchestra with strings, woodwind, and brass. The four-part choir contrasts with four soloists; this quartet sings the peaceful middle section of the three-section work. For the Carus edition Schubert's own autograph manuscript of his Magnificat was consulted again for the first time since 1888. Until 1989 this had been thought to be lost. This work is now available in carus music, the choir app! Score and part available separately - see item CA.7005300.
