Lute Sonata XX in A Major from the Dresden Manuscript for Solo Classical Guitar

The Flute sonata in G minor BWV 1020 one of the gems of 18th century Flute literature has been passed down to us over the years as a work of Johann Sebastian Bach but its authenticity is disputed. Recent research suggests that the composition most probably came from the pen of Bach’s oldest son Carl Philipp Emanuel. This new edition is an extract from the Bärenreiter edition BA 5220 which also includes the two Flute sonatas BWV 1033 in C major and BWV 1031 in E-flat major which are of similarly doubtful authenticity. The sonata in G minor has been edited by the renowned Bachscholar Alfred Dürr using the editorial guidelines of the New Bach Edition as a basis and it appears now for the first time as a separate performing edition.

Silvius Leopold Weiss (1687 1750) is known to guitarists as the greatest baroque composer for the lute, yet most are only familiar with the earlier portion of Weiss?s prolific output found in the British Library in London. Inspired by a forty-year friendship with the late Douglas Alton Smith - a major figure in the scholarly study of the history of the lute - guitarist, composer, and head of the guitar program at Temple University in Philadelphia, Allen Krantz explored the Weiss manuscripts found in other European cities, particularly the Dresden editions which contain the fifteen sonatas that Weiss produced from the late 1730s to the end of his life. Transcriptions of three of those fifteen late sonatas are featured in this book in modern standard notation along with the original lute tablature as found in the Sächsische Landesbibliothek - Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek, Dresden. While the baroque lute?s tuning makes some works awkward or impossible on the guitar, the three works presented here?Sonatas No. 35 in D minor, No. 42 in A minor and No. 45 in A Major? are in their original keys which happen to be guitar-friendly. The author?s generous and scholarly ?Preface? provides thorough historical and performance notes for the music in this volume. While just three of Weiss?s 109 multi-movement lute sonatas are represented here, the importance of this publication cannot be overstated. In Sonata 7 in D major Balicourt opens with a suave intricately rhythmic Adagio. The following Presto with its delightful interplay between flute and bass including both octave doubling and stretto imitation is the most skittish movement to emerge from the composer’s pen. The finale is a ‘sandwich’ movement in which a Minuetto encloses a duple-metre Cantabile in D minor. Although the minuet could be said to exemplify one of those ‘easy’ movements referred to in Balicourt’s prospectus for subscribers its complex prescribed ornamentation requires sensitive handling. Sonata 8 in E minor is strategically placed as the final work inthe set being one of the longest as well as the most conservative; adopting the traditional four-movement configuration it continually harks back to the grand Handelian style. An eloquent Andante ushers in a Presto containing many slightly academic contrapuntal touches and much chromaticism. The subsequent Largo is only five bars long: its plain melodic line in minims and crotchets is the skeleton around which the flautist is expected to weave an elaborate embroidery. For the finale Balicourt introduces in effect a new version in triple metre of the second movement. The fact that all four movements are in E minor heightens the sense of unity which is expressed very concretely through their sharing of some thematic material.

Otar Taktakishvili (1924-1989) was a Georgian composer conductor administrator and artistic director who played a leading role in the post-war revival of professional Georgian music. He graduated from the TbilisiConservatory in 1947 having composed the official anthem of the Georgian Republic while still a student and before long he became a professor there. Later in his career he was Chairman of the Georgian Composersâ?? Union andMinister of Culture of the Georgian Republic. Taktakishvili like most Georgian composers of his generation was heavily influenced by local folk music. Georgian choral polyphony is among the oldest in theChristian world and its distinctive techniques are seen in his lyrical and expressive style.In the west Taktakishviliâ??s best known work is perhaps his Sonata For Flute And Piano in C major. Three Trio Sonatas for Two Violins (Flutes) and Bc Op.5 HWV 397 398 401The three Trio Sonatas in this edition were taken from the sonata collection published in London by John Walsh in 1739. Since hardly any chamber music compositions have come down to us from Handel’s later years other than the well-known D major Violin Sonata these Trio Sonatas can be considered as one of Handel’s last contributions to the field of instrumental chamber music.The first edition specifies two Violins or Flutes as melody instruments for the Op.5 Sonatas. However since scoring indications particularly in instrumentalchamber music were taken very liberally at that time it is alsoperfectly legitimate to play these works in other instrumental combinations (for example Violin and Flute).
