Ils vont des œuvres plus grandes comme 'Die Wuth über den verlornen Groschen' ou la Fantaisie op. 77 jusqu‘aux miniatures pleines d'esprit des bagatelles. En ce qui concerne leur genèse, elles traversent l'ensemble de l'œuvre du compositeur, depuis son séjour à Bonn jusqu'aux dernières années de sa vie. Variation form occupied Beethoven throughout his composing career. This first volume of G. Henle Publishers? two-volume edition of all his piano variations includes works from Beethoven?s time in Bonn as well as his early years inVienna composed between 1783 and 1799. Beethoven mostly took his themes from arias or songs from stage works that were popular at the time. Besides offering simple figurations around the melodic lines he also made more radicalvariations of his chosen material pointing the way forward to his future ?character variations?. The musical text of this Urtext edition has been completely revised on the basis of the critical report of the Beethoven CompleteEdition. There is also a detailed preface and commentary.

Like the ?Eroica Variations? op. 35 the Variations op. 34 were composed in 1802 on an original theme. The ?new fashion? Beethoven declared for both works to his publisher becomes apparent in opus 34 through the constant change of keys; from one variation to the next new tone colours and moods continue to unfold spanning the pastoral and the funereal while the melody of the theme remains largely unaltered. For the first time the Variations op. 34 are now available from Henle in a standalone edition. The musical text of the Urtext edition with extensive foreword and commentary was prepared on the basis of the later Critical Apparatus of the BeethovenComplete Edition. Here too the fingering comes from the esteemed hands of Ian Fountain.

Funeral March-Beethoven?s four-movement Sonata in A-flat major Op.26 belongs to his most popular works. It is dedicated to Prince Lichnowsky one of his most generous patrons and the dedicatee of for example the Grande Sonate pathétique Op.13 and Symphony No.2 Op.35.The work?s initial drafts date from 1800 01; it was first published in March 1802.This demanding sonata is highly varied in its form: it begins with a set of variations and contains the famous Marcia funebre sulla morte d?un Eroe as its third movement earning it the nickname ?Sonata with the Funeral March?. The identity of the title?s eroe (hero) remains unknown to the present day. The march was performed atBeethoven?s funeral on 29 March 1827 in an arrangement for orchestra.For this Bärenreiter edition Jonathan Del Mar possibly as one of the first editors of a modern edition consulted the composer?s autograph in the original. This enabled him to decipher details of Beethoven?s handwriting in particular with regard to the exact notation of doubtful slurs. The result is a most reliable and thoroughly-researched musical text. Differing readings and editorial decisions are documented in the Critical Commentary. The edition has been finely engraved and includes practical page turns. Band II-The variation genre occupied Beethoven his whole artistic life. Collected in the second volume of G. Henle Publishers’ complete edition of Piano variations are compositions from his middle and later Vienna years written between 1799 and 1823. Among them are groundbreaking works such as the two sets of variations on original themes opp. 34 and 35 the Variations in C minor WoO 80 and as the final crown jewel the Diabelli Variations op. 120. The revised musical text of the Urtext edition with an extensive foreword and commentary was prepared on the basis of the subsequent Critical Apparatus of the Beethoven Complete Edition. The fingering suggestions stem fromthe competent hand of Ian Fountain.

Urtext Edition-À l?époque classique et pendant une grande partie du 19e siècle les trios avec piano constituaient en quelque sorte des articles de mode. Il n?est donc pas surprenant qu?après Haydn et Mozart Beethoven se soit lui aussi essayé à ce genre et ait laissé en tout 13 trios avec piano. Les ?uvres contenues dans ce volume III présentent presque toutes de petites particularités: l?op. 44 n?est pas un trio à part entière mais se compose d?un unique mouvement de variations le WoO 37 fut écrit alors que Beethoven se trouvait encore à Bonn et se distingue par son instrumentation (piano flûte et basson) le WoO 39 fut écrit pour la petite Maximiliane fille de la famille Brentano «pourl?encourager à jouer du piano» l?op. 38 est une adaptation pour piano clarinette et violoncelle du septuor op. 20 et le dernier morceau n?est parvenu à la postérité que sous la forme figurant dans le cahier d?esquisses utilisé par Beethoven lorsqu?il était à Bonn. Aucune de ces ?uvres n?a l?envergure de ses grands trios avec piano mais elles restent néanmoins des témoins de son grand art.
