Loch Ness

In Scotland the monster of Loch Ness is a hot issue but the American state of Montana enjoys a comparable phenomenon going by the name of Montana Nessie. In the western part of this remote state lies Flathead Lake: a lake of 45 kilometres /38miles in lenght and 24 kilometres /15 miles breath. At several places its depth exeeds 100 metres.Nessies discovery takes us back to the year 1889 when captain James Kerr aboard the passengership U.S.Grant was startled by a ship unknown to himsuddenly approaching his vessel across Flathead Lake. However it turned out not to be a ship but an undefinable animal of immense size.From that moment onwards life would never be the same again in and around Flathead Lake.The composer wasinspired by the story and summarized the events into a symphonic poem but from a surprising angle:that of the monster. The exiting opening allows us to follow the monster in its natural surroundings.The fast follow-up movement depictsMontana Nessie trotting and frolicking about the Montana woods and prairies.From its abode it thorougly enjoys everything around it. This period abruptly ends in a short climax (Chimes). The solo for cor anglais marks a new period in themonsters life.The presence of people has a paralizing effect and the apprehensive atmosphere of the slow movement may be felt profoundly.The monster observes and mildly teases the ship. Abhor sounds force the ship to a withdrawal.The movingmusical continuation depicts the triumphant monster dancing an ironic waltz. The monsters fear and anger at the intrusion of his freedom run through the piece like continuous threads and develop into the works final theme.

Henk Hogestein s?est inspiré des Hautes-Terres pour réaliser Highland Games (Jeux des Highlands) une promenade musicale à travers trois des nombreux événements culturels et sportifs annuels : un Concours de Pipe Band (ensemble de cornemuses) à Inverness ; le tournoi international de tir à la corde d?Aberfeldy au cœur des légendaires monts Grampian et le tournoi de chevaliers à Balmoral qui se conclut par une trépidante danse du sabre écossaise.

Scotland is famed for its rich landscapes and proud heritage. It is also the country that is known for ???housing??? the Loch Ness Monster. In celebration of their heritage the Scots annually hold their Highland Games treating audiences to the traditional ???sports??? competed by their clan descendents. The Dutch composer Henk Hogestein used the Scottish Highland Games as a source of inspiration for this rugged three-movement work. A wonderful opportunity to celebrate Scotch culture with a highly-charged work for your Concert Band.

Cette pièce est construite sur un enchaînement de différentes mélodies à caractère celtique. En effet, ayant été passionné très tôt pour ces musiques, j'ai voulu composer une pièce dans cet esprit. Celtic suite débute avec 'les brumes du Loch ness', qui nous fait traverser la mystérieuse Ecosse. Un tapis sonore d'arpèges de claviers, de tenues de clarinettes et battements de timbales, soutient une délicate flûte se perdant dans le brouillard...Sur 'les crêtes Vosgiennes' étaient installés des temples celtiques dédiés au soleil aujourd'hui disparus. Cette partie construite sous la forme d'un choral y fait allusion par son coté mystérieuse et majestueuse.Dans 'le pub de Dublin' on joue de la musique presque en continu. Les musiciens se succèdent et font danser les gens, apportent joie et bonne humeur lorsque les éléments se déchaînent au dehors. Et un des rythmes de danse fétiche des Irlandais est la 'Jig'. Il s'agit d'une rythmique en 6/8 ternaire. Celui-ci est très entraînant et les musiciens qui jouent ces mélodies savent qu'elles sont très virtuoses! Votre orchestre aura toute la joie de danser sur ce thème enlevé!Notre voyage continue en ' terre Bretonne', haut lieu de la culture Celtique en France, où les danses étaient également chantées, un meneur chantait une phrase qui était répétées par tout le monde. Dans celtic suite, se sont les instruments qui se répondent pour styliser cette tradition.La pièce se finit en Galice, terre Espagnole au bord de l'océan Atlantique. 'Les côtes de Galice' proposent un rythme plus syncopé accompagnant une nouvelle mélodie où les percussionnistes peuvent y exprimer tout leur talent! ?I think there is a similarity between the infinite big and the infinite smallness of everything,? says Yann Tiersen. ?It's the same experiment looking through a microscope as it is a telescope.? Named after a chapel in a small village on the island of Ushant, Kerber marks a new chapter in Tiersen?s career. A chapter still true to Tiersen?s nuanced and subtle approach but one that sets out with his most overtly electronic material to date. Beautifully textured, highly immersive and thoughtfully constructed, Tiersen creates an electronic world, providing an environment in which the piano source exists. A sense of place has often been a central theme in Tiersen?s work and here that is no different. Each track is tied to a place mapping out the immediate landscape that surrounds Tiersen?s home, linking back to his thoughts on the possibilities of the infinite smallness. Kerber is an extraordinary collection of seven pieces for Solo Piano and Electronics by critically acclaimed composer Yann Tiersen. This official, exclusive folio is beautifully printed on high-quality, uncoated paper with striking graphic artwork. All seven pieces are presented for Solo Piano and follow a preface from the composer.

This work for soprano and baroque chamber orchestra using text by William Blake was commissioned by The Academy of Ancient Music on the occasion of its 25th anniversary. The piece is dedicated to the memory of Diana Princess ofWales.Quoting Tavener:The concept of solo soprano (representing earth) at ground level handbells (representing the angels) at an intermediate position and the main baroque ensemble at a high level (representing heaven) fittedexactly with the Blake text which I had decided to set. When seen as things truly are the earth is a mirror of the Eternal World and when seen correctly it is possible in this world to live in Eternity's sunrise. God does notexist in the world. And yet at the same time He is reflected in it giving it form and structure. The music should be played with quiet joy as a day of sunshine and calm full of gentleness and radiance.Duration c. 15mins.
