This work was written in 2005, prompted by the composer's determination that young members of junior, music school and conservatoire wind ensembles should not be limited to transcriptions for lack of original compositions, especially contemporary ones. The new devices used in the Little Suite are suitable for student players to try out. Indeed, they enjoy them - for instance, purring or whistling into the instrument. Each of the three-or-four-minute movements of this four-movement work can also be performed separately. The titles of the movements are the following: 1. In cheerful mood, 2. Song, 3. Joke, 4. March. This music in modern idiom, full ofinteresting new effects, offers young players an opportunity for enjoyable music-making together, and at the same time prepares them for playing more difficult contemporary works.

Dieses Werk schrieb der Komponist 2005, für Jugendblasorchester. Jeder der vier Sätze dieser Komposition lässt sich auch einzeln vortragen. Die Titel der Sätze sind: 1. Gutgelaunt, 2. Lied, 3. Spass, 4. Marsch. Die in moderner Sprache gehaltene, mit vielen interessanten neuen Effekten bereicherte Musik bietet den jungen Instrumentalisten Möglichkeiten zum heiteren, gutgelaunten Musizieren in der Gemeinschaft und bereitet sie auch auf das Spielen schwierigerer zeitgenössischer Musik vor.

The first impulse to compose these 3 Little Suites for Guitar came from the desire to offer very young students compositions not framed by the usual features of �??music for children�?? but, rather, meant to introduce into their musical horizon sonorities, rhythms, and expressive modalities not generally experienced in the more �??traditional�?? courses of study.
As the compositions developed, the project underwent some slight modifications, so that in the end one could say that the three suites became progressively more difficult, though remaining, in their deep essence, quite �??simple�??.
I would recommend paying careful attention to the titles of the pieces and to the expressive markings. Although it was not my intention to write �??descriptive�?? music, I have tried to handle these pieces like stage scripts, giving each a specific �??character�??. For this purpose my long experience as a composer of theatre music has been very helpful.
It would give me great satisfaction if guitarists of every age would enjoy performing these suites. I would like teachers to find in them cues for proposing to their pupils further refinements concerning both technique and expression, never forgetting how inexpressible music truly is.

A Little Klezmer Suite was commissioned by Rushton Park High School to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their band programme. They gave the premiere in a virtual online concert in October 2020. Klezmer music originated inthe ‘shtetl’ (villages) and the ghettos of Eastern Europe, where itinerant Jewish troubadours, known as ‘klezmorim’, had performed at celebrations, particularly weddings, since the early Middle Ages. 'Klezmer' is a Yiddish termcombining the Hebrew words ‘kley’ (instrument) and ‘zemer’ (song). The roots of the style are found in secular melodies, popular dances, Jewish ‘hazanut’ (cantorial music) and also the ‘nigunim’, the wordless melodies intoned bythe ‘Hasidim’ (orthodox Jews). The melodies used in the four movements of A Little Klezmer Suite have traditionally been used in Jewish wedding ceremonies and celebrations.

A Little Klezmer Suite werd geschreven in opdracht van de Rushton Park High School ter gelegenheid van het vijftigjarig bestaan van het blaasorkest van de school. De première vond in oktober 2020 plaats tijdens een virtueelonlineconcert. Klezmermuziek is ontstaan in de 'sjtetls' (dorpen) en getto’s van Oost-Europa, waar rondreizende Joodse troubadours, de zogeheten klezmorim, sinds de vroege middeleeuwen optraden bij feesten, met name bruiloften.Klezmer is een Jiddische term waarin de Hebreeuwse woorden 'kley' (instrument) en 'zemer' (lied) zijn gecombineerd. Little Tokyo Suite is a work in three movements for wind ensemble, with a flexible 10-part orchestration suitable for concert band or fanfare band. It portrays the “Japantowns” established by Japanese emigrants around the world. They are often called “Little Tokyo”, in reference to the capital of Japan. The three movements each focus on a region with such a Japanese community. This suite is dedicated to the concert band of the conservatory of the 12th arrondissement of Paris, whose conductor is a lover of Japanese culture, and to Mochizuki Junior High School, Saku City (Nagano, Japan). They premiered this work, 10,000 km away from each other, in 2022.
