Bent Sorensen THE BIRDS OF LAMENTMany years ago I heard the Irish myth about the Bird of Lament, the bird whose cries at night augur the death of a sailor at sea. My piece is full of 'lamento' whereas traces of birds only occur sporadically.'The Birds of Lament' is the third piece in my trombone trilogy which also contains 'The Bells of Vineta' for trombone solo and 'Birds and Bells' for trombone and ensemble. The piece was written for the Ensemble L'Itiniraire as a commission from the Gulbenkian Foundation.Bent Sorensen.

Anyone who believes traditional tonality to be no longer capable of expressing anything more than timeworn cliches should listen to Kerem's work. (Robert Maxham / Fanfare) Lament for violoncello and strings was written as a commission from Camerata Nordica and its principal cello, Per Nystrom, in 2008. At Per's request the solo part in this piece was composed to represent a lone human voice in a world of disappointment. The composer tells: I used the violins and violas as an operatic choir: they support and comment on the lament of the lone human being. The bass line is one long drone throughout the piece, representing destiny or unwanted reality. It disappears only when the solo voice with the chorus of violins and violas intensifies in their disagreement with life. At the climax of the piece the solo voice is momentarily swallowed by the chorus, only to return with an angry statement of the opening phrase. Thereafter the chorus calms down in acceptance that the world won't change. The bass drone returns to haunt the dying lament of the lone voice. The very last phrase is the only one in a major key and echoes as a prayer for hope. Duration c. 9 minutes. Score (all three versions), separate solo parts for violoncello / viola / violin and orchestral parts (33221).

for string orchestra, with optional organ This moving piece for string orchestra is full of pathos and emotion. Stylistically evocative of Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings and the distinctive musical language of Arvo Pärt, Lament is based around a two-bar arching ostinato, artfully developing musical fragments and enriching the texture to reach a powerful central climax. This is a welcome addition to the string orchestra repertory. This piece was recorded on the 2019 Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra CD Tree of Life under the title 'And Wept Bitterly (Lament on an Ostinato for String Orchestra)'.

Lament (1969), for solo soprano and chamber ensemble, was an exceptional experiment: Maros followed the strong tradition of Bartok and Kodaly in clothing an authentic Hungarian folk lament in modern effects obtained from percussion and harmonic solutions and by using aleatory. This work initiated his rediscovery of tradition. It embodies his urge to face himself, in the light of the latest composing techniques, with his own Hungarian musical past and reincorporate it into the new music style he had developed just a couple of years before. (Anna Dalos).

Manmohan Ghose was a professor, poet, and brilliant scholar from Eastern India in the late 19th century. He was educated in London, and was one of the first poets originally from India to publish poetry in English. A Lament is one of his earliest published poems; it progresses with vivid, scenic language from lullaby to permanent goodbye. Much later in life, Manmohan experienced a series of family tragedies that gave him a unique perspective on grief. After returning to India to mourn his father's death and eventually the passing of his wife, he never again made it back to England as he had wished to before his own death. The text of this piece has been paired with a mixolydian modal structure and a blend of musical elements designed to invoke a nostalgic, dream-like atmosphere. In the words of the composer: I like to think of this piece as a metaphorical hall of mirrors. The original 'image' of the melody becomes the source for multiple echoes and imitations that blossom into layers of polyphonic movement. As a nod to the poet's birth place, notes reminiscent of the kan-swar grace note technique of Hindustani classical music add ornamental interest to the piano and voices. This piece functions as an excellent educational introduction or further study into the concept of modes. When presenting this piece to a choir, directors may find it helpful to identify G as the tonal center and follow up with an explanation that G mixolydian has the same key signature as the key of C, because it naturally has no sharps or flats.Manmohan Ghose was a professor, poet, and brilliant scholar from Eastern India in the late 19th century. LAMENT was originally composed in 1999 for solo piano, in memory of Judith Arron, whose visionary goals for Carnegie Hall were matched by her abilities to achieve them. The performance challenges in LAMENT are musical rather than technical: finding and projecting the line from beginning to end; using rubato for expressive and formal purposes; shaping phrases; achieving variety of color; and employing these dimensions to create a spontaneous and personal rendering. Two piano parts are included to provide for solo tuning as well as concert pitch performance.
