Ce genre musical se reconnaît aisément : une mélodie syncopée accompagnée d?une ligne de basse régulière au rythme simple. Comme ces deux éléments sont en partie décalés et, parfois, se contrarient même, la musique swingue beaucoup. « Rag » signifiant « lambeau », le terme « ragtime » provient donc de cette impression de déchirement entre mélodie et ligne de basse.
