(BWV 1121) the ?Fantasia in G major? (BWV 571) the ?Fugue in G major? (BWV 577) and the C major version of the ?Toccata and Fugue in E major? (BWV 566). On the other hand the ?Prelude in G major? (BWV 568) as well as the alternative versions of the ?Fugue in C minor? (BWV 574a) and the ?Prelude in A major? (BWV 536a) have been discarded as presumably spurious.Besides the new compilation and corrections of the musical text the volume also contains a detailed Foreword by Peter Wollny with observations on each work and the extant sources. Orgelchoräle der Leipziger Handschrift-Volume 8 presents the important work group called the “Leipziger Chor?le.” Next to the late versions compiled and entered by Bach himself in the manuscript “P 271” all of the early versions with their sometimes widely divergent readings have also been edited here. The examination and evaluation of all relevant copies uncovered many a surprising new reading. Responsible for the new edition is the renowned organist and musicologist Jean-Claude Zehnder. An extensive introduction and highly commendable commentary round off this volume too. They also can be downloaded here. Next to a reliable musical text the highestimportance was placed once again on performance-practical aspects the results of which can be seen in the greater spaciousness for the notation and comfortable page turns. A complete reconstruction based on the 1731 and 1744 versions of the text-In its various reconstructed and completed version Johann Sebastian Bach’s St. Mark Passion BWV 247 occupies a fixed place in the pre-Easter concert repertoire. As the third of what were originally five Passions not only was it the latest to be written it is also the most enigmatic of the known Good Friday works composed by the Kantor of the Thomasschule. The fundamental approach behind the present version of the St. Mark Passion is to attempt to get as close as possible stylistically to the performed versions of 1731 and 1744. It is hoped that in the service of church music practice this completereconstruction will thus help to transform the third of Bach’s Passion works into a stylistically unified whole.
