Melodia Blues a swinging composition by PeterKleine Schaars begins with a robust intro. Fourbars follow which can be repeated ad lib. toallow for an optional announcement (this is theso-called VAMP). The blues theme follows alongwith two written-out improvisations. These can beexpanded - depending on the resources withinyour band. After a richly scored reprise of thetheme the sparkling final chords close the piece instyle. Bring a great jazz feel to any concert withthis fine new work.Grade 3

The viol player Diego Ortiz who was musical director at the court of the Spanish viceroy in Naples in the mid-16th century wrote a textbook which became authoritative for the art of improvisation during the Renaissance. This textbook contains pieces with written improvisations in the tradition of the Renaissance period. Although the writing of improvisations was a contradiction in terms even then Ortiz' pieces are excellent textbooks for the study of the structures and rules of this art. The edition contains information preparatory exercises and suggestions of the course 'Didaktik Blockflöte' of the University 'Mozarteum' in Salzburg under the direction of MariaDorner-Hofmann. This edition is part of the new Schott Student Edition series which offers varied literature at five different levels of difficulty from 1 (easy) to 5 (difficult) for instrumental lessons. Level: 3

Mahamatar (Study Score). Mahámátar is written for Oriental or Middle-Eastern female voice, distant boys' voices (in a vast acoustic), tubular bells and muted strings. The music is an invocation to the Great Mother Mahámátar in Sanskrit, and to the Theotóke (God-bearer) in Greek. Originally written to accompany a fi lm by Werner Herzog which deals with South American Indians who travel for many miles on their knees to venerate the miraculous Ikon of The Mother of God of Guadalupe. Mahámátar may be performed by a solo voice or alternatively the melody could be played by a solo cello, with decorations and improvisations by the singer.

25 Easy Pieces in 1st Position-Why a book with jazz duets for cello beginners? This book of duets by the Italian jazz cellist and teacher Lucio Amanti wants to give cellists a first introduction into the jazz styles. All 25 pieces are written for the first cello in the first position with the pieces becoming gradually more demanding with regard to fingering bowing and harmony.Many of the pieces contain harmonic symbols in order to give the pupil (and the teacher) the chance to try their first improvisations. They can first play the piece as notated in the book and then repeat the section notated with chords as if it were a jazz standard. A new and fresh impetus for cello lessons!

Phillip Neil Martin's Human Drum for three voices (SSA). Duration: 3 minutes Composed: 2006 Also published as part of UYMP's Songspin Songbook ISMN M 57036 603 3. Human Drum was a collaboration with the Juice Vocal Ensemble. The piece began in the recording studio where I recorded Juice singing notated fragments I’d popped together and also their own improvisations. I then edited and cut up all the audio into very tiny fragments in a myriad of ways to make a short rhythm-based electronic 3 part vocal piece. This forms part of my larger work Voices of the Asylum for voices human beatbox electronics fashion andspace. The final track bares very little resemblance to the original recording studio session. Several weeks after I had finished Human Drum Juice asked me to transcribe the audio so they could sing the piece live (which wasn’t easy to do after all the cutting and processing!) therefore coming full circle! There are now two versions of Human Drum the studio electronic track and the ‘live’ notated version. Human Drum is dedicated to the Juice Vocal Ensemble with affection. First performed by Juice Vocal Ensemble on 3rd May 2007 at York Spring Festival Sir Jack Lyons Concert Hall University of York.
