Sing Pop A Cappella is a collection of a cappella arrangements of fantastic pop songs old and new, by renowned teacher, singer and director Gitika Partington. Her arrangements are used by choirs across the UK, and she emphasises that being able to read music is not necessary. This work for soprano solo and SATB chorus was commissioned by the Norwich Festival of Contemporary Church Music.Tavener:'In the Orthodox Church the Lament of the Mother of God is normally sung on Holy and Great Friday. Inits full length it lasts about half and hour and it is intoned by the Priest or Bishop while the people venerate the Epitaphios (or Shroud of the Dead Christ) which is in the centre of the church and decorated withflowers.The Lament must be sung with an ikon-like stillness and great purity. It grows in intensity as it climbs in tessitura but without anything sudden or remotely melodramatic.For the Orthodox Church there is never thesense of absolute desolation felt by the Western Church on Good Friday. Hence the cry of the Mother of God 'Dost thou change my grief to gladness by thy Resurrection?' followed by the full forces: 'Rise O God and judge theearth.'Mother of God also features in the film Philomena starring Judi Dench and Steve Coogan and directed by Stephen Frears.

Requiem-Franz Suppè wrote his Requiem not as a humanistic or pantheistic lament for the dead but as a work created on the basis of firm Christian and Catholic faith. The fact that Suppè succeeded in writing a Requiem which remains within the theological-liturgical bounds without sacrificing the values of an autonomous work of art is perhaps the greatest - although hitherto unrecognized- achievement of this work.

For SATB unaccompanied-This thoughtful and sensitive setting of the preces and responses for Evensong was written by composer John Gardner for Chorus SATB with solo parts for the priest. Gardner was a modern English composer and teacher held in great esteem who is best known for his setting of Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day which is a most popular arrangement of that carol and frequently performed. While many modern composers have turned their attention to the evening service they have generally confined themselves to the magnificat and nunc dimittis. This step into the liturgical responses is most welcome. The 3/8 setting of The Lord’s Prayer is a particular pleasure.

The great American Composer Kirke Mechem has taken this classic folk song of unknown origin and set it for SATB chorus Baritone soloist (playing the part of the poet of this text) and Piano or Organ with optionalString Orchestra. This is a theme and variations arrangement and one that will challenge any fine choir without challenging the ears of the listeners.
