4-Hand Inspirations

The Six Easy Pieces arranged by German composer, conductor, and organist Christian Gottlob Neefe (1748--1798) are inspired by the original vocal/orchestral score of The Magic Flute. These pieces are idiomatic piano duets (one piano, four hands) that remain faithful to the original composition. Filled with wit and charm, they contain many of the memorable elements of the opera: Papageno's magic bells, gentle love duets, tenderhearted trios, and lively arias. Based on the 1793 first edition, Neefe's dynamics, articulations, and phrase marks have been preserved. Editorial suggestions have been given in parentheses and footnotes to aid in performance. / Piano 4 Mains

Upon entering a painting was written in 2008/09 and it was commissioned with funding from the Britten-Pears Foundation and the RVW Trust by Piano 4 Hands (Joseph Tong and Waka Hasegawa) to whom it is dedicated. The inspiration of the piece was the kind of painting which as you gaze at it seems to draw the onlooker into the frame indeed into the very paint itself. The specific trigger for the idea of the piece was the Rothko Exhibition at Tate Modern in 2008 Rothko has long been a favourite painter of mine even though his creative world is very different from my own. However there were one or two paintings in the exhibition in which I felt strongly this sense of beingdrawn into the inner life of the painting especially when I was able to incur the wrath of the curators and step close to the paintings and examine the surface in detail. The opening and closing sections of the piece with their gradual thickening of the harmonies and (at the end) equally gradual thinning reflect this sense of stepping forward into and backward out of the works. The inner life of the faster sections while apparently very un-Rothko-like reflects the extraordinary teeming inner life of the brush-strokes.

Jean-François Tapray (1738-1819), né à Nomeny en Lorraine, fit une bonne partie de sa carrière à Dole puis Besançon avant de servir à Paris où on le signale comme organiste à la chapelle de l'Ecole royale militaire peu avant la Révolution. Il meurt à Fontainebleau vers 1819. Cette sonate à quatre mains, qui date probablement de 1800, est un véritable chef-d'oeuvre très inspiré par l'école viennoise de ce temps. Elle fait grand effet au concert et a l'immense mérite de donner à jouer, de manière très équilibrée, aux deux instrumentistes. The Czech composer Emil Hradecký (born 1953) is the author of a whole number of instructive pieces for children often inspired with dance music and jazz. The previously published Piano works of Hradecký – A Little Jazz Album Dance Compositions for Piano Four Hands and Jazz Etudes – are further complemented by Jazz Pieces For Twenty Fingers. The publication offers simple four-hand stylisations of popular modern dances (waltz cha-cha ragtime samba tango etc.)

Per Pianoforte A Quattro Mani (O Due Pianoforti). Par CALLIGARIS SERGIO. Sergio Calligaris was born in Rosario (1941), Argentina. He is one of the last musicians to incarnate the traditional 19th century figure of pianist, teacher and composer, inaugurated at the beginning of the 19th century by Muzio Clementi and carriedon after that by a sequence of famous names that the history of music has handed down to us. As a pianist, he began to give public performances at the age of 13, making his debut in his home town Rosario. Following this success, he embarked upon an extremely busy career as a soloist, giving numerous recitals in Buenos Aires and other citiesin Argentina. He continued to take advanced lessons with eminent exponents of the most prestigious international piano schools. In 1974 he became an Italian citizen and settled in Rome, teaching piano as principal instrument at the S. Pietro a Majella StateConservatory in Naples, the Luisa DAnnunzio Conservatory in Pescara and the Alfredo Casella Conservatory in Aquila. As a composer, he began - at just 9 years of age - to study in the rigorous school of Paul Hindemith, under the guidance of Father Luis Machado, from whom he inherited a love of counterpoint and a strong taste for harmony. He took a diploma incomposition, counterpoint and fugue at the age of 16 at the Amigos del Arte Society in Rosario, going on in 1964 to do an advanced course in 12-tone counterpoint at the Cleveland Institute of Music. The catalogue of his compositions, which has nowreached Op. 55, encompasses a huge range of instrumental/vocal chamber music and symphonic works: a vast and articulated catalogue, in which Sergio Calligaris’s composition expresses its inspiration through the dramatic development of a dialecticalcontrast between the two natures of the composer’s personality - the elegiac and the dithyrambic - which confront and interact with each other giving rise to artistic outcomes of a deeply moving nature. / Niveau : Intermédiaire à Avancé / Répertoire / Piano 4 Mains

Par LIANG LEI. I was fascinated with the Chinese landscape painter Huang Binhong (1865-1955), particularly with the albums the artist painted when he was nearly blind from cataracts. The image that inspired this composition was a detail taken from the painting. The detail was reconstructed by high-resolution scanning, and it reveals an intricate world hidden within the paintings' brushstrokes. It draws us into the landscape of microscopic elements - a fiber in the rice paper, or the trace left by a single hair in the brush. From The Bohemian Forest a set of six character pieces for Piano duet was written at the turn of the year 1883-84 at the instigation of Dvo ák?s publisher Fritz Simrock and appeared in print in the spring of 1884. Sonata for two pianos. Par HEINIO MIKKO. Mikko Heiniö's April evenings for black twins (2015), a sonata in five movements, is a virtuoso piece for pianos, inspired by evenings in the month of April. The twins here are identical, so in addition of being individuals they also form an orchestral super instrument. Duration: c. 15'. Wilhelm Ganz (1833-1914) was a German musician who escaped from the continent in 1848 and spent the rest of his life in London. As a violinist and conductor he worked alongside Berlioz and Wagner and held a singingprofessorship at the Guildhall School of Music. Despite being well-regarded in his lifetime his compositional work has largely fallen into obscurity over the last century.Ganz’s Op.12 is Qui Vive(c.1860-70): inspired by the Galop a lively country dance but intended for concert performance. It is scored for a Piano Duet and keeps the pianists entertained by modulating several times through closely linked keys based around Eb Major.
