Great Works for Piano Four Hands

Arrangement for Piano Fourhands-In the 19th century arrangements for Piano four-hands were usually versions which people played at home if the works could not be heard in concert. In cases such as these Brahms did not however just make functional versions butcreatively transcribed his works for the piano. As the composer he allowed himself greater freedom than arrangers for publishers did. In this form his arrangements greatly contributed to the success of his works in musical life inthe 19th century. It is on account of their creativity that Brahms’ arrangements have attracted new interest in musical circles over the last few decades. This Urtext edition of the Symphonies nos. 1 and 2 for piano four handsoffers a scholarly musical text following the recently published volume in the Brahms Complete Edition.

This inexpensive compilation draws upon authoritative sources to present favorite Piano works of the Baroque era. Unlike many other anthologies of music from the era which vary widely in the quality of their content this collection comprises only the greatest works of the period. Intermediate and advanced Pianists will find these carefully chosen pieces a rewarding and satisfying reflection of the glories of the Baroque. Since most of Lisztâ??s vast output of piano music both original and arranged was obviously intended for the virtuoso it's easy to forget that he also wrote short and beautiful pieces which are technically undemanding. Moreover many of these are far more interesting musically than the typically brilliant works. By way of introducing this less familiar side of a great keyboard composer this edition offers twenty-one non-virtuoso pieces that he wrote between the ages of 38 and 74. They are arranged roughly in chronological order and prepared from original sources by leading scholars including informative introductions and performance notes. For piano-Sergei Prokofiev was born in Sontsovka in the Ukraine on the 23rd of April 1891. Soon showing a talent for piano and composition by the time he was fourteen he was attending the St. Petersburg Conservatoire where he received extensive schooling inpiano harmony composition and conducting. Prokofiev was greatly interested in contemporary composers (Reger dIndy Debussy and Richard Strauss) and quickly made a name for himself with his revolutionary aesthetic language of great harmonic andrhythmic impact. His compositions were inspired by Symbolism and Futurism two artistic movements predominate at the time. Prokofiev attracted attention through his early works – the Etudes Op.2 and the Pieces Op. 3 and 4 – owing to his specialtechnique and percussive treatment of the piano (similar in some respects to Bartok) although he was also capable of rich melodic invention.Actually composed in 1907-08 before his Four Etudes for Piano Op. 2 Prokofiev’s Four Pieces for Piano Op. 3 and 4 were only published in 1911. Concert pieces some show Scriabin’s influence on the composer especially in the titles.

Lotus Land was undoubtedly the work for which Scott is best known. Written in 1905 Lotus Land achieved great popularity and was arranged for a vast array of instruments. It is a dreamy impressionistic piece and extremely innovative for its era. Cyril Scott was a British composer active from the very late 19th century and through the 20th whose work could be termed late Romantic with elements of impressionism with free use of exotic harmonies. Scott was an extremely prolific composer who left more than four hundred works ranging from symphonies operas and concertos to many works for smaller ensembles solo instruments and short songs.Virtuoso Violinist Fritz Kreislerwas the premier Violinist of his day and some believe the greatest Violinist of all time. In addition to his original compositions Kreisler often transcribed or arranged the work of other composers.
