Gloria is a large-scale festival piece commissioned by the Really Big Chorus for performance at London's Royal Albert Hall.Cast in five movements 'Gloria' sets the traditional Latin text 'Gloria in excelsis Deo' and incorporates a setting of Psalm 150 in alternative Hebrew or Latin texts. Between the movements readings from Hinduism Buddhism Taoism and Islam are given in English or any language of choice. 'Gloria' follows 'Te Deum' 'Stabat Mater' and 'Requiem' from the composer of 'Adiemus' and 'The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace'.The complete vocal score of Gloria is available as BH12083.

Gloria a composition having many parallels with Vivaldi?s better-known setting of the same text (RV 589). It dates similarly from the period 1713-1717 when the composer was acting choirmaster at the Ospedale della Pietà in Venice. It even borrows from the same work a slightly earlier Gloria by the Venetian amateur composer Giovanni Maria Ruggieri for its closing fugue. However the present Gloria RV 588 departs from its more famous counterpart in ingeniously combining its opening movement with the final movement of a specially designed introductory motet Jubilate o amoeni chori (RV 639/639a) for solo contralto (or soprano) and strings although Vivaldi makes it possible through optional cuts indicated in the autograph manuscript in Turin to perform the Gloria alone. With or without its Introduzione RV 588 is a masterly work with many memorable moments not least in its heartfelt second movement set to the words ?Et in terra pax?. The Introduction and Critical Commentary for this vocal score prepared by Antonio Frigé are closely based on those of the Critical Edition by Denis Arnold and Michael Talbot published in 1990.

Cast in four movements it sets the traditional Latin text 'Gloria in excelsis Deo' and incorporates a setting of Psalm 150 in alternative Latin and Hebrew texts. Gloria follows Te Deum Stabat Mater and Requiem from the composer of Adiemus and The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace. This edition features a fully realised keyboard reduction for rehearsal purposes.

Few baroque composers were ever able to create work as sunny as joyous as Vivaldi did in this beloved Gloria. The contrast of mood throughout the work as it moves through the drama of the Mass to its satisfying double final movement shows the composer at the height of his powers.Vivaldi composed this work in Venice in about 1715 during his fruitful time at the Ospedale della Piet . In his lifetime this priest composer and virtuoso Violinist achieved enormous musical success. Considering his great popularity in the modern era it is difficult to believe that public appreciation of his work declined after his death and that the Gloria languished undiscovered forcenturies. It wasn’t until 1957 that the restored work was heard again in its entirety. Since that time this moving and joyous Gloria has been recorded more than one hundred times and perennially appears on concert series around the world.
