George Gershwin

Gregory Stone has transcribed these three selected preludes for one piano-four hands. For much of his life George Gershwin sought to integrate the worlds of jazz and classical music. These pieces are not jazz improvisations but they do show something of the style of his own playing. Gershwin had intended to compose a set of twelve a sort of jazz Wohltemperierte Clavier but his unexpected death from a brain tumour at the age of 38 prevented this. At least seven survive (others may have ended up as songs) and this set of three as published form a satisfying unit. The first opens with a blue-note riff which forms the basis of the first theme.Contrasting material follows making use of a distinctive repeated note figure then the first idea reappears in a quasi-orchestral climax. The second prelude shows a curious kinship with Chopin???s A minor Prelude with its eerie accompaniment and hypnotic melody. The third exploits a similar major/minor ambivalence but dextrous syncopation gives it driving rhythmic energy.

The première - not a huge success - took place on 10 October 1935 in New York.With his opera Gershwin wanted to gain recognition as a composer of classical music. Incidentally he demanded that all parts were sung by black performers; only a few unimportant parts without sung lyrics were allowed to be performed by white actors. This rule still applies: Gershwin has stated in the terms of his will that only black people were allowed stage the opera.Porgy & Bess has become popular only after Gershwin’s death. In 1959 a wonderful film was made; the soundtrack won a Grammy Award. The work is not very often performed possibly because of the difficulty of finding a whole cast of black opera singers. However various pieces from the opera are still regularly performed in numerous arrangements.

According to Ira Gershwin ' Lullaby ' was probably originally intended as a piano solo as he was in possession of an unfinished fragment of it. However it only became publically familiar when it emerged as a string quartet which George Gershwin had written sometime between 1919 and 1920. We do not know exactly when Gershwin composed the preceding piano version of Lullaby but the theme subsequently appears in 1922 as the heroine's love song in his opera 'Blue Monday'. Until the present edition arranged By Alicia Zizzo there was no existing score for piano solo.
