'Lucia di Lammermoor' was one of the biggest triumphs of Donizetti's career and remains as his outstanding masterpiece. The libretto was written by Salvatore Cammarano based on Sir Walter Scott's novel 'The Bride of Lammermoor'. The story runs as follows: Lord Enrico Ashton is outraged to find that his sister Lucia is in love with his mortal enemy Edgardo. He tricks Lucia into believing Edgardo unfaithful and insists she marry Lord Arturo Bucklaw. The wedding takes place disrupted by Edgardo who curses Lucia. Lucia begins to lose her mind and when Enrico challenges Edgardo to a duel Lucia kills Arturo then collapses and dies herself. On hearing the tragicnews Edgardo kills himself.
