These five spirituals for unaccompanied chorus despite the occasional appearance of complexity are basically simple: the harmony indeed is of the simplest possible. The apparent complexity arises primarily from the number of parts which are not however all real parts. These in fact seldom comprise more than the traditional four. Lines are frequently doubled at the octave rather in the manner of organ registration so that the chorus needs to be thought of as an organ-like body producing a homogeneous sound at many levels of the chords and melodies. Thus the numbers and even the kinds of voices needed to produce these chords and melodies in the most effective manner mustbe selected by the conductor from the whole body of the chorus according to the conditions of performance. Great latitude can be taken in this respect even to the extent of using low female voices for the high registers of written tenor parts or high male voices for the low registers of written alto parts etc.The only parts which are strictly differentiated are those marked Leader. These should be an individual voice standing out from the choir sufficiently to lead the singing both in the words and in the music. They need not be soloists engaged from outside.If the spirituals are performed in this way the apparent complexity of certain printed pages will disappear. Any reasonably sized chorus with four good leaders can produce the effect required.

During his formal music training he developed his main musical interests of music theory and composition while studying with William Baxter and Hugh Thomas. From 1966 to 1972 he was the organist and choir director at the Cathedral of St. Paul Minnesota. From 1973 to 1994 Dicie taught reading and vocal music in Nashville public schoolsand from 1976 to 1994 was organist and choir director at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Franklin Tennessee. He then served as organist and Church Music Director at Trinity United Methodist Church Franklin Tennessee. Percussionniste et chanteur, Paul Mindy, professeur au CNR d'Aubervilliers-la-Courneuve, est spécialiste des musiques du Brésil. Il anime des masterclasses dans le monde entier. Il reçoit le prix Georges Brassens et se produit en tant que chanteur à l'Olympia. Il reçoit également en 2001 le prix de l'Assemblée Nationale et en 2002 le prix de l'Académie Charles Cros. Paul Mindy est aussi l'auteur de livres-CD à succès aux éditions Didier Jeunesse : A l'ombre de l'olivier, Comptines du Baobab, Papagaio, Comptines créoles... En 2006, il participe au festival Percpan à Salvador de Bahia. Eric Sammut a débuté ses études musicales par l'apprentissage du piano, puis a suivi la classe de percussion de Michel Ventula au CNR de Toulouse. En 1989, l'année même où il obtient un premier prix à l'unanimité dans la classe de François Dupin et Georges van Gucht au CNSM de Lyon, Eric Sammut entre comme premier percussionniste à l'Orchestre de l'Opéra National de Lyon. Puis en 1995, le premier prix international de marimba de New York lui est décerné - il effectue alors une tournée de récitals et de masterclasses aux Etats-Unis, mais aussi en Europe et au Japon. Il enseigne le marimba au CNR de Toulouse depuis 1997, au CNR de Paris, ainsi qu'à la Royal Academy of London, et il est soliste à l'Orchestre de Paris. Après avoir participé à de nombreux enregistrements discographiques et vidéos avec l'Orchestre du Capitole de Toulouse, l'Orchestre National de Bordeaux-Aquitaine, l'Orchestre National de Lyon, l'Orchestre de l'Opéra National de Lyon, l'Orchestre de Paris, il réalise en 2005 un album de marimba solo, 'Four-Mallet Ballet'. Un enregistrement pour un nouveau CD est prévu en 2006, avec les musiciens Philippe Berrod, Eric Echampard et David Patrois. Howard Arman, director of the Bavarian Radio Choir, has been actively engaged with international Christmas carols through various Christmas-related CD productions of his choir in the past years. This has resulted in a number of original arrangements for four- to eight-part mixed choir a cappella, shedding new light on well-known classics such as O du fröhliche [O, you joyful], Stille Nacht [Silent Night] and Lasst uns froh und munter sein [Let us be happy and cheerful]. The first volume includes five Christmas carols from the German-speaking regions. They range from simple but harmonically intriguing settings such as Lieb Nachtigall, wach auf [Dear nightingale, wake up] to eight-part sound paintings with bell-like chimes as in O du fröhliche and classical double choir settings such as Resonet in laudibus . The second volume includes five Christmas spirituals with English texts, forming a contrast to the solemn and festive character of the first. The choir can prove its swing and jazz qualities here; the stirring arrangements are a gain for classical Christmas concerts, too. Following the tradition of the spiritual, some settings also require soloists, which can, however, also be recruited from the choir if adequate singers are available. The first piece combines the spirituals It?s a Birthday and Wasn?t That a Mighty Day to form a medley, Ain?t That a Rockin? gives a moment of tranquility before the likewise rousing spirituals Mary Had a Baby and Little David conclude the volume.
