This reworked edition of the Folksong Suite by Antal Farkas will help to widen the repertoire of youth ensembles and adult amateur orchestras. The composer's son, Tamas Farkas has supplemented the score of the work, adding symphonic wind ensemble parts, and has in a number of places reworked it slightly in accordance with present-day requirements. Frigyes Hidas (1928-2007) was the most prolific Hungarian composer for wind ensembles, and his works are the most often performed. His extremely popular folk song suites are the finest examples of Hidas's mature style. Few composers are capable of tackling folk song arrangement in a worthy manner. Bartók himself had the following to say about the challenges with which this genre confronted the 20th-century composer: 'Knowing how to deal with folk melodies is one of the most difficult tasks. I venture to claim that it is as difficult as, if not more difficult than, writing a large-scale original work This much is certain: for folk song arrangement the appropriateinspiration is just as essential as for the writing of any other kind of work.' With the publication of the first collective, scholarly edition of the a cappella works of Sándor Veress (1907-1992), the publishers were paying a long-standing debt in the Veress centenary year. Volume I contains all the already published works for children s, female and male choirs, together with those of the works of his mature period preserved in manuscript which have attained their definitive form: seven choral cycles or suites, and five single-movement works. The musical concept of the mainly 3- or 4-movement Hungarian folksong suites and cantatas is closely akin to that of the composer s instrumental folksong series written at the same time. Also included in thevolume are a musical setting of Sándor Pet fi s poem Orbán and arrangements of two Swiss folksongs and a children s song of American origin (Mary had a little lamb).

Mit der von wissenschaftlichem Anspruch geprägten Veröffentlichung der ersten Sammelausgabe der Chorwerke von Sándor Veress (1907-1992) im Jahre des Veress-Zentenariums 2007 tilgte der Verlag alte Schulden. Der erste Band beinhaltet neben allen schon früher publizierten Kinder-, Frauen- und Männerchören auch als Manuskript erhalten gebliebene, ausgereifte Werke, die über eine endgültige Form verfügen: sieben Chorzyklen bzw. Chorsuiten und fünf einsätzige Werke. Das musikalische Konzept der großteils 3-4-sätzigen Volksliedsuiten und -Kantaten ist eng mit den zur selben Zeit komponierten instrumentalen Volksliedserien des Komponisten verwandt. Weitere Bestandteile desBandes sind die Vertonung des Gedichts Orbán von Sándor Pet fi und die Bearbeitung der zwei schweizerischen Volkslieder sowie eines aus Amerika stammenden Kinderliedes (Mary Had a Little Lamb).

The two pieces which comprise Cameo Suite’’ come from diverse backgrounds, one American and the other English. The Nightingale’’ is a traditional English folksong about unrequited love. The Glendy Burk’’ was composed by Stephen Foster and is a riverboat song depicting the life and times of the riverboat Glendy Burk’’ on the Mississippi.
