Par KAHKONEN GAY. Five Miniatures for Solo Flute by Gay Kahkonen. From the composer: 'I wrote these little pieces as compositional exercises for myself during the depths of the Covid pandemic. My goal was to write a series of one-minute-long pieces that were not too serious in nature, and to write each piece in a single sitting. The result is this set of trifles.' Extending his repertoire for the guitar Skempton this time introduces it into the realm of a chamber ensemble in the form of five miniatures. The mix of mellow timbres creates a soothing but thoughtful set of pieces.

for Clarinet Bass Clarinet Piano Violin and Cello-(untitled) was the name of a store in the SoHo section of Manhattan that sold nothing but art postcards -- thousands of them. I had three such postcards taped to the music rack of my piano and one day in early 1968 I decided towrite a set of musical miniatures somehow depicting these paintings. The first “Perro ladrando a la luna” by Miró is the most literal. The opening sustained chord represents the horizon line the risingclarinet duo is a ladder with five rungs (the piano chords). The piano tremolo at the end is the moon shining and the violin as the dog barks at it. I consider this piece to be my Opus Zero the first piece where I managed toachieve my musical goals.

Twentieth century composer Carey Blyton may have been most famous for his song Bananas in Pyjamas which later became a hit children’s television show and for his many works of incidental music for television programs but he is primarily celebrated for bijou miniatures like this set of five humorous songs.Two of the songs are freely acknowledged to be based on the work of others -- John Dowling and Giles Farnaby and the rest are in Carey’s own modern melodic style. The entire cycle lasts approximately five minutes.
