This authentic arrangement of ten movements from the Water Music suites dates from Handel's lifetime, but is published here for the first time, edited by the distinguished Handel scholar Donald Burrows. Its simple, light scoring makes it excellently suited to use by schools and small instrumental groups. It can be performed in many different combinations from the original two violins, bassoon and continuo to string quartet or wind-based group.

These TWO SUITES were composed in response to a request form Heini Schneebeli, the musical director of 'TROMBONANZA 2017'. Santa Fe in Argentina is the backdrop for this exciting annual event involving many hundreds of student and professional players. The FIRST SUITE has three movements and is intended for a trio of younger tenor trombonists working with a teacher on bass trombone who will add richness and depth to the ensemble sound. It is my hope that this piece will encourage, entertain and challenge student players and provide useful concert material for use in the promotion of this unique and versatile instrument. John Frith - 2017This work is appropriate for younger performers at an intermediate level all in bass clef. The three movements total about 5 1/2 minutes in length and have the following titles:1. Totem Tango2. Full Steam Ahead3. Clowning Around

”Small Suite for Flute and Piano is a piece written for the Paris Conservatoire contest by Pierre Petit. Really melodious, it lasts eight minutes and is divided into three distinct movements. The first part, ?Gai et allant? is quite fast and has to be played joyfully. It uses the whole range of the instrument with some really high notes and includes a Cadenza. The second part, ?Lent et très chanté?, is slower, slightly lower in range and really melodious. It is quite short compared to the other parts. The third and final movement has the same kind of range as the first one. Fast, it features a part to be played at Marzuka tempo and one to be played at the same tempo than the beginning. The piece ends on a really high trill. Small Suite is really enjoyable to play and to listen to. It however requires some strong skills in terms of technique and sonority that would be acquired by advanced players: the difficulty is therefore rated at 7.“.

Frigyes Hidas was the most prolific Hungarian composer for wind ensembles and his works are the most often performed. His extremely popular folk song suites are the finest examples of Hidas's mature style.Few composers are capable of tackling folk song arrangement in a worthy manner. Bartók himself had the following to say about the challenges with which this genre confronted the 20th-century composer: 'Knowing how to deal with folk melodies is one of the most difficult tasks. I venture to claim that it is as difficult as, if not more dif- ficult than, writing a large-scale original work This much is certain: for folk song arrangement the appropriate inspiration is just asessential as for the writing of any other kind of work.'The first suite works up nine folk songs of differing character and atmosphere. To perform them a brilliant technique is required, and an ability to shape the music freely. (Hungaroton HCD 31612).

Frigyes Hidas (1928-2007) was the most prolific Hungarian composer for wind ensembles, and his works are the most often performed. His worldwide popularity is based on works such as Balettzene (Ballet music), Vidam zene (Cheerful music), El nem tancolt balett (Undanced ballet), Requiem and Save the Sea. His folk song suites, which are enormously popular in his homeland, are fine examples of Hidas' mature style in the genre of folk song arrangements. The first suite works up nine folk songs of differing character and atmosphere, while the second, with its recurrent structure, makes use of five melodies, creating a modern harmonic environment around them and thereby highlighting even more the beauty of the melodies. To perform these works effectively, ample technique is required, as well as an ability to shape the music freely. Highly recommended for ensembles with an interest in Hungarian wind music and folklore.
