Following the huge success of their instrumental method Look, Listen & Learn, Michiel Oldenkamp and Jaap Kastelein have focussed their attention on school bands and devised a completely new method that can be used in both instrumental lessons and class bands or wind ensembles.
Learning Music Together is the new method for young wind players and percussionists, aged eight and above.
Learning Music Together has been developed in close collaboration with professionals from the class band world, music schools, and academies in the Netherlands and Germany.
Learning Music Together combines instrumental lessons with a course for class band. The drum lessons offer drum -specific items such as new notes and technical exercises while at the same time supporting the learning of the class band, with a focus on rhythm, melodic structure and playing music together. The method consists of two volumes. Volume One introduces the first instrumental notes in unison and then develops part-playing with duets. Volume Two builds on the skills taught in the first volume and introduces pieces in three parts. In addition, supplementary material is available on the extensive website, e.g. demo- and accompaniment tracks for all pieces, additional pieces of music (well-known songs) and video tutorials. Learning Music Together is logically structured and illustrated in a child-friendly way - a perfect combination for young musicians!

Jost Nickel'S BEGINNER BOOK is perfect if you want to start or restart playing the drums and like to work PRACTICALLY. We've cut out long theory explanations and replaced them with helpful tips on HOW TO SET UP your drumset, and the techniques you need to play complete grooves right away. Step by step, you'll learn the corresponding music notation and you can listen to all exercises thanks to the ONLINE audio examples recorded by Jost himself. With gradually increasing levels of difficulty you will; practice FILLS in different note values; play DUETS with a friend, your teacher or the corresponding ONLINE AUDIO TRACKS; and internalize various important PLAYING TECHNIQUES, such as GHOST NOTES, CROSS STICK, and RIMSHOTS. As you progress, you will naturally train your COORDINATION and TIMING, learn important standard patterns and develop an understanding of musical structures. The BEGINNER BOOK is well rounded off with Jost's tips for effective practicing and several playlists with song examples for different playing techniques. I wrote this book for newcomers and those who want to start again. I am confident that it is extremely suitable for use in lessons because of its practical approach and the playing technique needed to play the first rhythms is explained quickly and is intuitive for the most part. The challenge is rather to coordinate the different limbs, Jost states.

Woody Woodblocker is a novelty piece featuring the title instrument as a soloist. It is suitable for bands currently in the first year of lessons. It should be performed in a lively manner and played at a tempo deemed suitable by the director. While the typical woodblock is usually struck with a drumstick, the director may wish to explore other types of blocks and mallets which may prove more effective with bands of varying sizes. To overcome the issue of balance, the woodblock notes are primarily sounded while the winds have rests within a measure. Young bands, therefore, with more than a few players in the percussion section may use more than one woodblock player on the solo part without upsetting the balance between woodblock(s) and winds.
