Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy completed his first oratorio – St. Paul Op.36 – in 1836 at the age of twenty-seven. The first version which was premiered on 22 May 1836 was then extensively revised by the composer. This second version which at the same time served as the basis for the published version was premiered as early as October that year in Birmingham. The acclaim with which the oratorio was received was exceptional. Within eighteen months of completing the score Mendelssohn was able to list fifty performances of the work. Robert Schumann praised the work effusively and even Richard Wagner who later denigratedMendelssohn was full of admiration. Today St. Paul belongs to the core repertoire of sacred choral music. This Urtext edition of the oratorio edited by the internationally-recognised Mendelssohn scholar Michael Cooper is based on all critical sources. As well as the principal version of the work the score also includes for the first time numbers which were composed for the first version and subsequently removed. On 13 June 1830 Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy finished his Rondo Capriccioso. After the Leipzig publishers Hofmeister and Breitkopf & Härtel had refused to publish the work – probably because of the seemingly excessive fee demanded by the composer – the work eventually was published by Mechetti in Vienna and J. B. Cramer Addison & Beale in London almost at the same time. Originally intended as a study Mendelssohn revised the piece and added an andante introduction thus managing to create one of his most outstanding Piano works which has maintained an unfailing popularity until today. The new editionof the Vienna Urtext Edition is based on all extant sources with the first edition from London being of particular significance.

Ballade by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe-During the summer of 1799 Goethe wrote his ballad ?Die erste Walpurgisnacht ? and asked his friend Carl Friedrich Zelter to set the work to music. Zelter however felt unable to do this and so Goethe?s wish was only realised thirty years later by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. The ?heavenly words? of the pagan ballads had impressed the composer so much after a visit to Weimar that he was inspired to set them to music. In 1832 the composition took shape and was performed a year later in the Sing- Akademie in Berlin.Mendelssohn was however unhappy with the first version of the work and held it back until he decided on a radical revision ofthe work ten years after its premiere. Die ?erste Walpurgisnacht? was first performed in 1843 in Leipzig in the presence of Robert Schumann and Hector Berlioz in the form in which the work is still performed today. The publication of this edition by John Michael Cooper Associate Professor of Music History at the University of North Texas (Denton) makes the work available in an Urtext edition for the first time in time for the 200th anniversary of the composer?s birth. The edition reflects the latest state of research and the volume includes a Critical Commentary.- One of Mendelssohn?s most important secular works in an edition reflecting the latest research findings.- Bärenreiter Urtext for the Mendelssohn anniversary year 2009.- Critical Commentary (Eng)- Full score (BA9072) and vocal score (BA9072-90) for sale; performance material (BA9072-72) available for hire.

(+)
With his Variations Sérieuses Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy contributed to the anthology Album-Beethoven which had been initiated by the Viennese publisher Pietro Mechetti and whose proceeds were to be donated for the funding of the Beethoven monument in Bonn. In order to do justice to the high standards of the composer to be honoured Mendelssohn decided in favour of a cycle of variations which clearly stands out from the superficially virtuoso variation style of that time. The new edition of the Wiener Urtext Edition is based on the autograph engraver’s copy and the first prints. In addition the correspondence of Mechetti'seditor Becher with Mendelssohn could be consulted for clarifying problematic textual instances. The notes on interpretation by Peter Roggenkamp cover various aspects – from learning to master the technical demands to practical performance details. The edition is rounded off by a practical and user-friendly notation.

In 1832 the Royal Philharmonic Society of London honoured the young German composer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy with several commissions. One of the works composed as a result was the A major symphony the ?Italian? based on Mendelssohn?s experiences in Italy in 1830 and 1831. The work was premiered in 1833 conducted by the composer.Today the Italian Symphony has a firm place in the canon of classical masterworks though at its premiere and both the following performances the work was not entirely positively received.Mendelssohn himself was unhappy with it. In 1834 he revised the last three movements but didnot complete this revision. To this day the early version of the ?Italian? is the one played everywhere whilst the revised version has remained to a large extent unknown. Bärenreiter?s critical new edition edited by Christopher Hogwood includes all the performance material for the complete version of 1833 together with the last three movements in the composer?s revised version. Conductors can now choose between the early and revised versions; the revised one includes the first movement from the early version.- A famous work for the Mendelssohn anniversary year in a new Urtext edition.- With the well-known early version and the composer?s revised version.- Includes an informative foreword in English and German.- With facsimile pages.- Full score & performance material (BA9094) available for sale.

(+)
Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Felix Concerto for Violin and Orchestra E minor op. 64 Second version 1845 -New source situation owing to recently rediscovered proofs -Revised Urtext edition -With an Introduction (Eng./Ger.) on the genesis of the work and the influence of the first soloists on the shaping of the solo part Mendelssohn?s Violin Concerto op. 64, is a key work of the 19th century, adhering to the classical style of Beethoven while pointing the way to the romantic ethos of Brahms. It has long been known that Mendelssohn performed the work with three soloists in succession: Ferdinand David, who worked closely with the composer during its composition and played it at the première; the ?child prodigy? Joseph Joachim; and Hubert Léonard, a young Belgian virtuoso about whom little is known. As proof sheets for the Violin Concerto in E minor were long considered lost, it could be described as somewhat of a sensation when proofs for the solo violin part resurfaced together with a letter from Mendelssohn to Léonard. The letter informs us that the composer invited Léonard to his home in Frankfurt in order to make his acquaintance. It was already known that Mendelssohn had given proof sheets to David; now we know that he also gave some to Léonard. The recently discovered proofs reveal how Léonard played the concerto with Mendelssohn on that memorable evening in February 1845. That the young violinist made a positive impression on the composer is confirmed in the latter?s correspondence following their joint performance. The editor of this revised edition of the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto, Clive Brown, is an acknowledged expert on Romantic performance practice. This study score complements the full score and orchestral parts (BA 9099), the piano reduction of the 1844 version (BA 9099-92), the piano reduction of the 1845 version (BA 9099-90), as well as the brochure ?Performance Practices in the Violin Concerto op. 64 and Chamber Music for Strings of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy? (BA 9060).

LIght pieces by Cornelius Gurlitt, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Paul Zilcher, Eberhard Werdin and Reinhold Weber Instrument : piano (6 hands) Nombre de Pages : 52 Charles Burney (1726-1814), to whom we owe the educational merit of 'Duets for two performers', also points out one of the difficulties of that entirely new genre: and although at first sight the greater proximity of both players' hands seems restricting and confusing, a little practice and imagination as regards fingering and positioning of hands will eliminate these problems. This applies particularly to these original (and adapted) piano pieces for six hands. They are intended for both school and home, and used appropriately and intelligently by a discerning teacher may offer pupils equal 'study and leisure' opportunities. Apart from the first original compositon for six hands by Wilhelm Friedrich Ernst Bach (1759-1845), a grandson of J.S. Bach, this book contains in particular 'pièces célèbres' in skilful arrangements by Theodor Herbert (first edition 1880) and Max Schultze (first edition 1888).
