Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809 - 1847) a composé la musique de la pièce de théâtre de William Shakespeare A Midsummer Night?s Dream (Le Songe d?une Nuit d?Été) à deux moments différents. En 1826, à l?âge de 16 ans, il écrit une ouverture de concert (Op. 21). Seize ans plus tard, en 1842, il composa la musique de scène (opus 61) pour le roi Frédéric-Guillaume IV de Prusse, dans laquelle il incorpora l?ouverture existante. L?ouverture a été créée à Stettin (alors en Prusse, aujourd?hui Szczecin, Pologne) le 20 février 1827, sous la direction de Carl Loewe. Mendelssohn a dû parcourir 80 miles à travers une tempête de neige déchaînée pour se rendre au concert, qui est devenu sa première apparition publique. Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream incidental music to the play by Shakespeare is best known for the famous Wedding March though the work contains an array of beautiful music. The instrumental movements are frequently performed as an Orchestral suite or as stand-alone pieces.The Overture was composed when Mendelssohn was just seventeen years old written as a concert overture. Then when King Frederick William IV of Prussia commissioned the adult Mendelssohn to create incidental music for the whole of the play in 1842 Mendelssohn incorporated the Overture and its themes repeatedly throughout the work. Mendelssohn particularly loved Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’sDream having read it with his sister from childhood. His incidental music for the play ranks among the best of its genre skillfully generating the spirit of each of the characters establishing ambiences for the various scenes and complementing Shakespeare’s own drama.

The famous Wedding March scored here for for easy piano is from A Midsummer Night's Dream which Mendelssohn composed in his teens and then augmented in later years with full incidental music for Shakespeare'splay.
