To this day, Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) remains a prolific composer for wind instruments, despite being a violinist himself. However, his compositions for other instrumentations have not gone amiss, Evening Star being no exception. During his studies at the Paris Conservatoire, Bozza won prizes for violin, conducting and composition, as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He then conducted the orchestra of the Opéra-Comique and became Head of the Conservatoire in Valenciennes, whilst remaining a prominent composer. Composed in 1946, Bozza's Evening Star is based on a poem of the same name by Alfred de Musset, a prominent poet during the early 1800s. This choral work is arranged for female voices; Soprano, Mezzo Soprano and Contralto. Containing much musical variation, Bozza's Evening Star is an exciting addition to the choral repertoire.

“To this day, Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) remains one of the most prolific composers for wind instruments, despite being a violinist himself. His 16 Studies for Trumpet, Bugle or Cornet is no exception to the composer's success. Compiled in 1950, Bozza's 16 Studies addresses advanced features of the Trumpet, Bugle and Cornet, including complex rhythms, articulation, chromaticism, variations in time signatures, breath control, phrasing, intervals, scales and arpeggios, amongst other aspects. For all advanced Trumpet, Bugle and Cornet players, Bozza's 16 Studies are essential to develop technique to a high standard.”.

“To this day, Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) remains one of the most prolific composers for wind instruments, despite being a violinist himself. His Three Pieces for Flute and Oboe, or two Flutes is an exquisite addition to the repertoire. Bozza's Three Pieces are exciting duets containing much musical variation and contrast. As music educationalist, Paul Griffiths has written of Bozza's compositions, ”“his works reveal melodic fluency, elegance of structure and a consistently sensitive concern of instrumental capabilities.”“”.

Scherzo, Op. 48 is a really lyrical piece for wind quintet (flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn) which lasts around 2 minutes 30 seconds. The work starts allegro vivo with the main theme and some variations of this theme by each instrument then appear to end up on a final Animando. It reminds of music played to hold suspense during movies. This restless piece requires a good mastering of breathing techniques. This book features score and parts. Eugène Bozza won different prizes at the Conservatoire de Paris such as the First Prizes for the Violin, conducting and composition, as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He composed several operas, chamber works and ballets among others.
