42 Etudes for Violin Solo

The Viennese Jakob Dont is considered one of the most important Violin pedagogues of the nineteenth century and wrote numerous study pieces that are indispensable classics of the pedagogical literature for the Violin to this day. Among them are foremost his 24 ?Études et Caprices? op. 35 which were written between 1840 and 1849 but issued in their definitive form by Dont in an overhauled anthology from 1880. This very advanced collection of etudes (conservatory level) was rapidly so successful that innumerable new mostly heavily reworked editions appeared in the twentieth century from violinists such as Carl Flesch Max Rostal or IvanGalamian. Now for the first time G. Henle Publishers? Urtext edition restores access to the unadulterated original with Dont?s authentic fingering and bowing suggestions and in impressive graphic quality with practical fold-out pages. His recording of Cage’s Freeman Etudes for Solo Violin has made musical history.Robert HP Platz born in Baden-Baden Germany in 1951 has conducted premieres of over 300 works with renowned orchestras such as the Orchestre Philharmonique de Luxembourg and worked with composers such as Hosokawa Huber Scelsi Stockhausen and Xenakis. Platz is also a composer. Since 1989 his compositions comprise associative connected parts of a diary-like continuous complete work. Since 1990 he teaches composition as well as performance practice regarding contemporary music at the University of Maastricht.

Sir Edward Elgar was an English composer many of whose works have entered the British and international classical concert repertoire. Among his best-known compositions are orchestral works including the Enigma Variations the Pomp and Circumstance Marches concertos for Violin and Cello and two symphonies. He was appointed Master of the King's Musick in 1924.Composed in 1892  Etudes Caracteristiques For Violin Op.24 is dedicated to the preeminent Hungarian Jewish Violin virtuoso and Elgar’s former Violin teacher between 1877-1878 Adolphe Pollitzer. Pollitzerbelieved that as a violinist Elgar had the potential to be one of the leading soloists in the country but Elgar himself having heard leading virtuosi at London concerts felt his own Violin playing lacked a full enough tone and he abandoned his ambitions to be a soloist.

The Austrian violinist and composer Jakob Dont (1815-1888) very early became a member of the Vienna Hofburg Theatre later of the Court Chapel. Although he had made a name for himself as a soloist he decided in favour of a career in education. For his instrument the violin he wrote about 50 works most of them modern opera pot-pourris and character pieces which are forgotten today. Apart from the preliminary exercises for Kreutzer and Rohde his 'Studies and Caprices' (opus 35) however have become an integral part of violin lessons. Praised by Joachim Auer and Flesch these outstanding studies were edited by Max Rostal in consideration of a modern violin technique andcomplemented by preparatory exercises and variants.

Rodolphe Kreutzer's 42 Etudes or Caprices for solo Violin. Rodolphe Kreutzer was a French Violinist teacher conductor and composer of forty French operas including La mort d'Abel. He is probably best known as the dedicatee of Beethoven's Violin Sonata No. 9 Op. 47 though he never played the work.

Published in early 1806 Kreutzer?s ?40 Études ou Caprices? for Violin there are 42 today are the product of his years-long employment at the Conservatoire de Paris and are the most comprehensive collection of studies from his quill. Their systematic and complete reappraisal of essential Violin technique make them an indispensable tool of the trade for every serious student of the Violin (conservatory level). In the intervening two centuries numerous reprints by various publishers followed the Parisian first edition frequently adapted by famous soloists and teachers. Just a few years after the first edition Kreutzer published a completerevision of this standard work in which he exchanged or heavily altered etudes. This second version of the collection forms the basis for our Urtext edition which nevertheless presents the variants from the early edition as well. The virtuoso and sought-after Violin pedagogue Ingolf Turban acted as a consultant for this edition and furnished it with modern markings so that it provides an ideal foundation for contemporary Violin instruction.

Although presented in the traditional order of the circle of fifths, this is where similarities to other violin scale-oriented books end.Of course, the etudes can be played using a mixture of positions by more advanced students.
