“Initially for Saxophone and Orchestra, this edition of Elegy and Rondeau by Karel Husa is for Saxophone and Piano and lasts 10 minutes. Written for advanced players, this piece is very interesting to play and is dedicated to Sigurd M. Rascher. Divided into two very distinct sections, the Elegy and the Rondeau, the Elegy starts ?Quasi improvisando? on a slow tempo (60) and requires some good technique as part of it relies on improvisation. The Rondeau, ?Allegretto?, is also quite challenging and requires a mastering of breathing techniques. Elegy and Rondeau is a perfect piece to play for recitals. Karel Husa is a Czech-born conductor and composer who later became an American national. His work is mainly classical and he won the Pulitzer Prize for his contribution to music.”.

Chen Yi’s ELEGY was composed in 2020 both as her own response to the covid pandemic, and in conjunction with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra’s series of solo commissions for their performers offered through the SPCO’s website. Musically inspired by a common bond with oboist Cassie Pilgrim’s cultural heritage from southern China, Chen Yi drew from Cantonese folk music materials, whose Yifan mode is particularly sad and mournful.Elegy was commissioned by the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra for its principal oboist Cassie Pilgrim who premiered the work at Ordway Hallin St. Paul, MN on November 28, 2020.Since Cassie and I share the same cultural heritage from Southern China, ELEGY has a strong influence from Cantonese folk music material, including the folk tunes in Yifan Mode, which sound sad and sentimental. This solo piece expresses a deep nostalgia for our loved ones, as well as our painful mourning for thousands of people who lost their lives around the world during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Ralph Vaughan Williams' Heroic Elegy and Triumphal Epilogue was composed in 1901. The Elegy dates from January and the Epilogue towards the end of the year, in early November. After some revision by the composer, both movements were performed by the Leeds Municipal Orchestra, conducted by Vaughan Williams, on the 21st January 1905 and this appears to have been the last performance of the work in the UK. The manuscript surfaced in the US in 1966 and is now in the Beinecke Library of Yale University.

The sense of longing, characteristic of every elegy, is really made for the tonal world of the clarinet. In this attractive concert piece, however, it is 'loaded with barbed hooks', as the composer once stated.

The formal shape of Hesketh's Elegy for brass band and percussion is built on mounting intensification of melodic lines as each section follows from another, with varying colors and intensity. It was prepared for the UK's Royal Northern College of Music Festival of Brass 2009, where the premiere was given by the Desford Colliery Band, conducted by Russell Gray.

Elegy, with its warmly expressive tenor-range melodies, is highly suitable for use at funerals, while the cascading joy of Festive Bells makes it perfect as a wedding recessional. Both pieces have that warm sense of Englishness that makes them very accessible to the first-time listener.

1. My Beautiful Island (in the present) - The character is that of a young woman who sings joyfully and exuberantly of the beauty of her island - a magnificent paradise. 2. Oh Home of Sweet Tranquility (20 years later) - The woman is beginning to realize that her cherished island is beginning to disappear due to the encroaching waves, storms and ever increasing heat. The bloom of her idealism and youth has been replaced with something more dreadful. 3. The Song Itself We Have Forgotten (an additional 20 years later) - The island clearly is doomed due to rising seas resulting in the evacuation of the entire island. She is experiencing a slow simmering shock, is dis-regulated, mumbling, and thoroughly disbelieving in what is taking place. Out in the distance I imagined an ocean liner on the horizon. She’s standing on a long line to be transported to the ship that will take her to an unknown destination and destiny. 4. Aubade - (a love poem welcoming or lamenting the arrival of dawn) As expressed by a seagull riding the wind above the ocean, my take of it relates to the arc of universal existence - Beginning, Middle (life expressed), End. Performance Note: Island Elegy and Aubade may be performed by 3 sopranos - one for each song- or by one soprano. In the latter case the final Aubade may be performed via a previously recorded multitrack rendering of all three parts or two parts with the soprano singing the top part. Alternatively, the pianist can accompany the soprano, (who sings the top line) by playing the bottom two parts on a melodica, piano or electric keyboard. Soprano(s) & Piano (with opt. Melodica) Duration: ca. 25' Composed: 2023 Published by: Subito Music Publishing.
