Classical composer Vicente Martin y Soler (1754-1806), sometimes called The Spanish Mozart, wrote a 1786 opera entitled Una Cosa Rara. While the opera has falled into obscurity, it was immensely popular at the time of its premiere. Six divertimenti by the composer, all based on themes from the opera, have helped preserve the legacy of this marvelous music. Carefully edited and restored from the original manuscripts by Dr. Patricia Cornett, these are important additions to the repertoire for advanced chamber ensembles. Scored for: 2 Oboes, 2 Basset Horns (opt. Bb Clarinets), 2 Horns and 2 Bassoons. Recorded by members of the Temple University Wind Symphony, Dr. Patricia Cornett, conductor.

Mozart's Five Divertimenti KV 439b (App. 229) were presumably composed between 1783 and 1785. They are widely prevalent in various scorings. Originally, the works were written for 3 basset horns (2 basset horns or 2 clarinets and bassoon) - early printings shortly after Mozart's death are known as sources. The arrangement and setting by the composer and conductor Paul Klengel not only opens up a different instrumental genre for the pieces. The usage of string instruments with different pitch ranges results also in a change of register that decisively alters the sound character.Paul Klengel arranged only four of the Five Divertimentos for strings.

Mozart composed his two ??Lodron Serenades? for open-air performances on the name day of Countess Antonia Lodron in June 1776 and 1777. Their bright ??al fresco? character is immediately recognisable. Alfred Einstein considered these two divertimentos to be ??among the purest, gayest, most satisfying, and most perfect that ever assumed musical form?.For both works Mozart chose an ensemble of two horns, two violins, viola and bass instruments. However, the second Lodron Serenade, the Divertimento in B-flat major K. 287, stands out from this sextet format by assigning a remarkably virtuosic solo role to the first violin, from the richly diverse opening movement to the finale with its almost ironic recitative and an exhilarating passage on the folk song ??D??Bäurin hat d??Katz verlorn?. Mozart himself played first violin in the 1777 performance. Later he wrote, ??They all opened their eyes! I played as though I were the finest fiddler in all Europe?.

English comments: Divertimento I and Divertimento II, for two violins were composed in 1996. These two sister compositions have the additional attraction of being unedited works which are representative of the composer's most recent style. This etymological description, which defines a personality rather than an established musical style, takes the form of a succession of contrasting dynamic movements. One of the most outstanding features is the way in which the two instruments break away from their usual range of sounds to create the ideal conditions for suggesting their latent extent of sound possibilities in compositions that could be extended perfectly well into a string quartet. The interplay between the two instruments opens up a whole range of possibilities: short motives in an imitative style often braking out into a repetition of brief themes with a lot of personality, sequences of transformations, repetitive rhythms, etc. All theses show the virtuosity of the players on their own and together and because of their characteristics, they are written in a very clear tonal language, a times, modal, oriental, or even pentatonic. The progression of the movements is governed by a desire for variety: between the fast opening and closing movements there is a sequence of relaxed andante -some of which are in an easy two-part canon style- in scherzzi -and these are the lightest, most airy fragments of the two Divertimenti. Recordings: Ilia Ioff and Ilia Teplyakov (violins), Columna Musica (1CM0156). Grabaciones: Ilia Ioff y Ilia Teplyakov (violines), Columna Musica (1CM0156). --Lluis Millet.

The Divertimento K. 247 in F-flat major was composed for the name day of Countess Antonia Lodron, and was first performed on 18 June 1776 in Salzburg. The little March K. 248 was presumably used to accompany the arrival and departure of the musicians on that occasion - it shares the same date of composition as the Divertimento, is in the same key, and is scored for the same instruments. Mozart later returned several times to this “First Lodron night music”, and posterity appreciated it too: the Divertimento was published just a few years after his death, and was also available in numerous 19th century copies. The only authorised sources for our Urtext edition, however, were the two autographs. Here, incidentally, the lowest part is designated “Basso,” which leaves open the question as to whether it was to be played by a cello, a double bass or both - a typical case of “as you like it” in the music of the 18th century!

Harald Genzmer's composition Divertimento di danza for string orchestra clearly continues the baroque form of the divertimento. This light music * in the truest sense of the word * consisted of a sequence of loose movements with free forms and dance movements alternat-ing in varied succession. The divertimento comprised five to six movements. Genzmer kept to all these facts but he brought new life into the old forms. Though he did not compose in the old style, he respected certain rules of the traditional form. Ouverture * Allegro (Fugato) * Adagio * Presto (on an Old French dance) * Finale (on an English dance movement).
