In his youth when still searching for his own personal style Debussy composed a series of short stand-alone piano pieces. He took traditional genres such as the ballade mazurka nocturne and waltz but in general used each ofthem just once as if trying them out. One such was the ?Valse romantique? published by Choudens of Paris in 1891 and thus written at the same time as his famous piano works Two Arabesques and the Suite bergamasque. This charmingwaltz is of moderate difficulty and thus ideal either as a pedagogical piece or for concert performance. Our collected volume Debussy: Piano Pieces (HN 404) offers numerous other short piano pieces of modest difficulty for thosewho find that this practical stand-alone edition awakens in them a desire for more.

For the Piano-Debussy was a unique and progressive composer whose independent approach to form harmony and colour dominates his piano pieces. The Children's Corner Suite composed between 1906 and 1908 is not necessarily intended to be played by children or even to children but is intended to capture the essence of childhood with charm grace and humour. The music was inspired by and reflects the world of childhood fantasy. It was once described as portraying the games escapades and gestures of a small girl from Paris. Debussy's intention was to create moods and sensations and utilising his typical harmonic richness and mastery of the impressionistic style he succeeds inan appealing and joyous fashion.

Debussy's famous piano piece 'The little negro' is one of the first classical piano pieces that takes up stylistic elements from jazz music: the then very popular 'Cake Walk' was inspired by Parisian circus artists like the clown Georg Fotitt and his black assistant Chocolat. The popular piece was published in the 'Méthode élémentaire de Piano' by Théodore Lack (for two hands) in 1909. Now it is available in a version for piano duet easily arranged for lovers of piano duet playing and for tuition.
