Bach: Complete Organ Works Vol. 5 Sonatas / Trios / Concertos - ed. by Pieter Dirksen Organ Works Based on Compositions by Bach and Others Genres such as sonata, trio and concerto were initially uncommon in the keyboard music of the early 18th century. Thus it comes as no surprise that many of the pieces in this volume are arrangements by Bach of original compositions and of works by other composers. Next to the Sonatas BWV 525?530 and the Concertos or concerto movements based on pieces by other composers BWV 592?596, the volume also contains the Trio in D minor BWV 583, the Trio settings BWV 585?587 as well as the early versions of BWV 527 and 528. Moreover, the CD-ROM offers eight arrangements of trio movements by Bach made by others. In his detailed introduction, Pieter Dirksen discusses various aspects of these pieces' origins, inasmuch as they help us better understand the works. The organist will especially welcome the comments on performance practice and registration. It is precisely the fact that these works derive from chamber-music models that leads to individual considerations for each work group.

Ici, l'instrumentarium est majoritairement composé de peaux, évoquant tout autant certaines grandes pages de Iannis Xenakis que les solos de batterie dans le jazz ou dans la pop. Tous les sons émis par le soliste sont de hauteur indéterminée. Je voulais en effet concentrer mon attention sur l'énergie, sur les dynamiques et sur le rythme. Tout à tour mélodique (dans le début de l'oeuvre), obstinée (par l'usage fréquent de notes répétées), répétitive (par exemple dans la section dévolue aux temple-blocks), martiale (dans un solo de caisse-claire à la fin de l'oeuvre), la matière est en perpétuel mouvement, l'orchestre agissant comme un prolongement sonore de la partie principale. En effet, l'harmonie est neutralisée, la relation entre soliste et orchestre reposant sur la verticalité. L'oeuvre emprunte son titre à une courte pièce de Bela Bartok, elle fait référence à l'aspect 'art brut' voire 'art brutal' de cette miniature du compositeur hongrois. The Bohuslav Martinu Complete Edition III/1/5. Par MARTINU BOHUSLAV. “Incarnation” (1956), Bohuslav Martinu’s fourth piano concerto, follows an atypical two-movement structure. It was composed for Martinu’s friend Rudolf Firkušný, who played from a copy of the autograph until 1970, when the composition was first put into print. The next work, “Concerto in B flat major for Piano and Orchestra”, known under the name “Fantasia Concertante”, was to be Martinu’s very last concert work. The concerto in three movements, composed at the request of Swiss pianist Margrit Weber, is quite different from the previous work in terms of its compositional means. In this case, Martinu strongly influenced the edition of the work. The present volume of the Complete Edition of works by Bohuslav Martinu is based mainly on contemporary copies containing the composer’s own modifications.
