The piece was commissioned by Shobi College of Music (Tokyo, Japan) for their entrance ceremony for freshman students in 2010, premiered by Shobi Ceremonial Wind Orchestra (Hirohisa Takanashi, conductor).In the introduction, woodwinds and euphonium play a solemn passage, followed by a brilliant fanfare in brass and percussion. Aggression, despair, but also hope for peace can be clearly heard within this work. In Banja Luka Jan de Haan reflects aspects of the former Yugoslavia, stricken by a civil war which brought terrible suffering to the people of this area. Banja Luka was written for the International Horn Festival in Leeuwarden in the Netherlands. Gecomponeerd in 1995 ter gelegenheid van het Internationaal Hoorn Festival in Leeuwarden. Banja Luka is een stad in Bosnië-Herzegovina en kent een rijke geschiedenis, wat blijkt uit de vele bewaard gebleven bezienswaardigheden. Mededoor zijn strategische ligging heeft Banja Luka achtereenvolgens onder Romeins, Turks en Oostenrijks bewind gestaan en ontwikkelde het zich in de loop van de eeuwen tot een belangrijk handelscentrum. De stad werd in 1969 dooreen aardbeving grotendeels verwoest en is daarna weer in moderne stijl opgebouwd. De naam Banja Luka betekent bad van Lukas. Volgens het volksgeloof heeft de evangelist Lukas hier het beroep van arts uitgeoefend en geneeskrachtigebronnen ontdekt, die nog steeds in gebruik zijn.Deze compositie vertolkt de componist zijn gevoelens ten aanzien van het in de jaren negentig door een burgeroorlog geteisterde voormalig Joegoslavië. Een agressieve inleiding stelthet conflict voor, waarna de saxofoonsectie het drama verklankt. Dit gedeelte mondt uit in een gebed, weergegeven door de trompet en de trombonesolist. Nadat het conflict weer even de kop opsteekt, volgt een tamelijk lichtvoetiggedeelte, waarmee de hoop op vrede tot uitdrukking wordt gebracht. Dat deze hoop voorbarig is, blijkt uit het feit dat de heersers (uitgebeeld door de altsaxofoon en de fluit) anders beslissen. De strijdkrachten rukken vervolgensop en laten een spoor van dood en verderf achter. Het noodlot slaat bikkelhard toe: onschuldige mensen worden verkracht en vermoord en er vinden op grote schaal etnische zuiveringen plaats. De bevolking lijdt.Aggression, Verzweiflung, aber auch Hoffnung - all das kann man in Banja Luka hören. In diesem Werk verarbeitet Jan de Haan seine Überlegungen über das ehemalige Yugoslawien, über das ein grausamer Bürgerkrieg hinwegfegte. Banja Luka wurde für das Internationale Horn Festival in Leeuwarden in den Niederlanden geschrieben.

This composition is based on a passacaglia theme, in which artistic perfection, symphonic drama and oriental melody lines play a role. The passacaglia is originally a dance made up of a series of variations above a bass line constantly present as an ostinato. It is not in this sense that the Symphonic Variations are in the passacaglia form but in the sense of the open form of the variations. Jacob de Haan, himself originally an organist, took his inspiration for this piece from the famous passacaglia for organ in C-minor by J.S. Bach. Following the introduction of the passacaglia theme (in the bass) the entry by the trumpets and trombones forms the majestic start to amusical adventure, in which this theme (often fragmentary) returns in variations. Then there follow two faster movements with dramatic contrasts and virtuose passages. Particularly striking here is the use of two characteristic intervals from the beginning of the theme namely the minor second and the augmented fourth. An apause in the composition comes in the slow bridge where a syncopated bourdon (perfect fifth) is constantly repeated. The tension grows in dynamics and harmony, and the oriental-flavour becomes obvious in the melody. We arrive at a faster movement via an accelerando, in which a perpetuum mobile based on the passacaglia theme is central. Finally the whole flows into a martial theme, in which the ostinato accompaniment n the descant derives from the passacaglia theme.

This concert work, the latest of Jacob de Haan works based on American states, is a suite in three movements, based on a well-known folk tune from Arkansas. In the course of this varied work the folk song appears in its complete form and in fragments, in major and in minor, as a ballad in a lyrical orchestration, as a blues, accompanied by a jazzy rhythm and at the end again in its pure form. In the process, all instrumental groups of the brass band get their chance to shine!De Amerikaanse staat Arkansas wordt wel ‘The Natural State’ of ‘The Land of Opportunity’ genoemd. Dit concertwerk in de reeks door Jacob de Haan verklankte staten is een suite in drie delen, gebaseerd op een bekende volksmelodie uit Arkansas.Tijdens de eerste maten komt in de euphoniums en bassen direct de volksmelodie naar voren, die uitmondt in een aantal lyrische maten. Deze vormen de inleiding tot een sneller tempo (Allegro risoluto) waarin de melodie in fragmenten wordt geëxposeerddoor euphoniums, baritons en bugel, canonisch beantwoord door de trombones. In het daaropvolgende Allegro molto klinkt een concertino-achtig spel in diverse instrumentgroepen, afgewisseld met een nieuwe, zangerige melodie. Het deel sluit af met devolksmelodie in de trombones, maar nu gedempt.Het tweede deel is een ballade waarin de volksmelodie in majeur klinkt. Na een inleiding van gedempte cornetten en trombones gevolgd door zacht koper is de melodie te horen in de euphoniums en baritons in een lyrische zetting. Even wordt detoonsoort weer mineur, wanneer instrumentgroepen elkaar imiteren. Met een bugelsolo komen we terug in majeur. Na een tussenspel klinkt een ornamentele variatie, vertolkt door een cornetsolo en euphoniumsolo,waarna een naspel met gedempte cornetten en trombones volgt. Het laatste deel komt tot klinken in een flitsend Allegro vivace, aanvankelijk vergezeld door chromatische lijnen in de begeleiding en een markant, door kwartentriolen afgewisseld ritme in het slagwerk. Dan klinkt de blues door in de cornetten enhoorns, begeleid door een jazzy ritme waarin de sfeer van de Bolero van Ravel even doorklinkt. Dit leidt via een parallelle triolenpassage terug naar het beginthema van dit deel, dat nu in diverse instrumenten te horen is. Dan verschijnt devolksmelodie weer in haar pure vorm in de euphoniums, waarop de bugel en later de solocornet reageert. Via enkele syncopische maten horen we het begin van de melodie nu in majeur gespeeld door respectievelijk cornetten en hoorns. Het slotgedeelteomvat een melodieuze lijn in lange noten die leidt naar een spetterend einde in kwartentriolen.Dieses Konzertwerk fügt sich in die Reihe der von Jacob de Haan vertonten amerikanischen Staaten. Es ist eine Suite in drei Sätzen auf der Grundlage von einem bekannten Volkslied aus Arkansas. In diesem abwechslungsreichen Werk erklingt das Volkslied ganz und in Fragmenten, in Moll und in Dur, als Ballade in lyrischer Besetzung, in Variationen, als Blues, von einem jazzigen Rhythmus begleitet, und zum Schluss wieder in seiner reinen Form. Dabei kommen alle Instrumentengruppen der Brass Band zum Zug!

Dedicated to the North American Brass Band Association, this is music that is full of energy and dynamic extremes. In form it draws from the overture style, although the themes are self-existing and the piece is programmatic. Working well asa festival opener, it sets a mood of excitement. Following the rhythmic fanfares of the opening, the first theme is presented in the cornets followed by a return to the same rhythmic material. A second theme appears in the horn section and isdeveloped, changing into a darker and sinister form of the same motif. Eventually a Maestoso section is reached, full of sustained block chords in the cornets and trombones, as the rest of the band counters with cascading lines that weavestraight through the brighter instruments.Dit levendige werk vol dynamische uitersten is opgedragen aan de North American Brass Band Association. Qua vorm is het geënt op de ouverturestijl, hoewel de thema’s op zichzelf staan en het een programmatische compositie betreft. Het is heelgeschikt voor de opening van een festival, want het creëert een enthousiaste, verwachtingsvolle stemming. Finalement on arrive une section de Maestoso, qui contient de nombreuses double-cordes soutenues chez les cornets et trombones, tandis que le reste de l’ensemblerépond par des lignes descendantes qui se tissent travers les instruments plus aigus.

One of my greatest pleasures in writing a concerto is exploring the new world that opens for me each time I enter the sometimes alien, but always fascinating, world of a solo instrument or instruments. For me, the challenge is to discover the deepest nature of the solo instrument (its karma, if you will) and to allow that essential character to guide the shape and form of the work and the nature of the interaction between soloists and orchestra. In recent years, many of us have become more aware of the musical world outside the Western tradition of musics that follow different procedures and spring from other aesthetics. And contemporary percussionists have opened many of these worlds to us, as they have ventured around the globe, participating in Brazilian Samba schools, studying Gamelan and African drumming with local experts, collecting instruments from Asia and Africa and South America and the South Pacific, widening our horizons in the process. I will never forget our first meeting in Toronto when Nexus invited me into their world of hundreds of exciting percussion instruments. The vast array of instruments in the collection of the Nexus ensemble is truly global in scope as well as offering a thrilling sound-universe. I was inspired by the incredible range of sound and moved by the fact that so many of these instruments were musical reflections of a spiritual dimension. After long consideration, I decided that it would not only be impossible, but even undesirable for this Western-tradition-steeped composer to attempt to use these instruments in a culturally authentic way. My goal was an existential kind of authenticity: searching instead for universal ideas that would be true to both myself and the performers while acknowledging the traditional uses of the instruments. Since many percussion instruments are associated with various kinds of ritual, I decided that I would allow that concept to shape my piece. Rituals is in four movements, each issuing from a ritual associated with percussion, but with the orchestral interaction providing an essential element in the musical form. I. Invocation alludes to the traditions of invoking the spirit of the instruments, or the gods, or the ancestors before performing. II. Ambulation moves from a processional, through march and dance to fantasy based on all three. III. Remembrances alludes to traditions of memorializing. IV. Contests progresses from friendly competition games, contests to a suggestion of a battle of big band drummers, to warlike exchanges. In the 2nd and 4th movements, another percussion tradition, improvisation, is employed. Written into these movements are a number of seeds for improvisation. Indications in the score call for the soloists to improvise in three different ways, marked A for percussion alone; marked B for percussion with and in response to the orchestra; and C where the percussionists are free to add and embellish the written parts. These improvisations should grow out of and embellish previous motives and gestures in the movement.
