Suite BWV 1006a. Baroque Lute version
The works of Johann Sebastian Bach which are generally considered to have been originally written for the lute (BWV 995-1000 and 1006a) are being published here in a series of practical editions. Unlike some other collections in Bach?s oeuvre, the lute works come from diverse sources and were never considered to be an organic unit during the composer?s lifetime. They were first grouped together at the end of the 19th century by the editors of the Bach Gesellschaft. The numbering of the Suites that is commonly used by guitarists today dates from the 1920?s.
Many questions remain regarding the playability of these works on the lute. The original keys are sometimes awkward, and there are problems of range and density of texture which can lead one to ask whether they were actually conceived for the lute at all. Interestingly enough, Bach?s solo Sonatas and Partitas for violin and his Suites for cello often lend themselves more organically to the lute.
As the problems relating to the so-called ?official? works became more clearly defined, a significant body of practical and musicological reflexions on these matters came to be published in different journals and editions. It is not my intention to go through this literature here, nor do I intend to discuss the varieties of sometimes very creative solutions that other lutenists may have utilized in approaching these pieces. My aim is, rather, to present playable versions in tablature for the standard 13-course lute of Bach?s time in the d minor tuning. I have steered clear of scordatura tunings and modifications to the instrument itself. In some cases, where the original key of a piece seemed unnecessarily cumbersome, I have changed it, taking it as a principle that there is nothing sacred in a tonality if it renders a piece, or parts thereof, unplayable. I feel that this approach starts with the music itself and seeks to bring it to life in a pragmatic spirit that is close to the 18th century.
Each edition in this series will have an introduction which discusses sources and specific points of interest or enigmas related to the individual piece. I feel that, ideally, every student of the lute should make his or her own versions of these pieces, and thus be directly confronted with problems related to them. Hopefully these editions will stimulate thought on these matters and also provide clear and practical solutions which can help one on his or her journey toward the incomparable expressiveness and depth of these works.

The new edition of the Wiener Urtext Edition based on the musical text of the New Schumann Complete Edition (edited by Joachim Draheim and Bernhard Appel) provides for the first time a reliable original text based on the sources especially for the 8 Polonaises which had been inadequately edited up to now. The appendix contains the popular Fantasiestücke Op. 73 (originally for Clarinet and Piano) edited by the composer and future Schumann researcher Friedrich Gustav Jansen. The arrangement published in 1851 had been revised and thus been authorized by Schumann himself.

The Bohuslav Martinu Complete Edition III/1/5. Par MARTINU BOHUSLAV. “Incarnation” (1956), Bohuslav Martinu’s fourth piano concerto, follows an atypical two-movement structure. It was composed for Martinu’s friend Rudolf Firkušný, who played from a copy of the autograph until 1970, when the composition was first put into print. The next work, “Concerto in B flat major for Piano and Orchestra”, known under the name “Fantasia Concertante”, was to be Martinu’s very last concert work. The concerto in three movements, composed at the request of Swiss pianist Margrit Weber, is quite different from the previous work in terms of its compositional means. In this case, Martinu strongly influenced the edition of the work.
The present volume of the Complete Edition of works by Bohuslav Martinu is based mainly on contemporary copies containing the composer’s own modifications. The edition presents numerous new findings about the genesis of both works./ Recueil / Orchestre

The 'Concerto da Camera” (1941) is the last of his works inspired by the Baroque concerto grosso. The 'Rhapsody-Concerto”, composed eleven years later (1952), was the first work of his so-called 'fantasia period”, marked by a more open sense of form and an expansion of tonality. The edition of the 'Concerto da Camera' shows, for the first time, the extend of Martinu's modifications to the work since its composition and publication, particularly on the solo violin part. The edition of the 'Rhapsody-Concerto” takes into account, among others, the discovery of previously unknown contemporary performance materials.
This volume of the Bohuslav Martinu-Complete Edition (BMCE) is based on a wealth of text and music sources, in particular autographs and contemporary copies that were recognized by the composer and early performers of the works, as well as some first editions created in collaboration with Martinu./ Répertoire / Conducteur

The first performance of ?Má vlast? as a six-part symphonic cycle took place on 5 November 1882. With the founding of the Czech Philharmonic in 1896 this work received a far greater reception. Since 1952 the music festival ?Prague Spring? has opened with this complete cycle.
This edition is based on the ?Study Edition of the Works of Bedrich Smetana?, vol. 14, supplemented by an up-to-date detailed foreword about the genesis and history of the work by Marta Ottlová.

This edition published as a book features the conductor’s score with all the following instruments: 16 First Violins 16 Second Violins 14 Violas 12 Cellos 10 Double Basses 1 Piccolo 3 Flutes 3 Oboes 4 Clarinets 3 Bassoons 1 Piccolo Trumpet 3 C Trumpets 4 F Horns 3 Trombones 1 Tuba Suspended And Chinese Cymbal 1 Glockenspiel 1 Xylophone 1 Marimba. It is written in seven movements: Introduction Strophe I Antistrophe I Strophe II Antistrophe II Epode and Coda; and The Epode featuresbirdsong and is played by 18 of the string instruments. Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) was a French organist and composer passionate about Ornithology and one of the most important composer of his century. Inspired by Japanese music he had a very special way of composing and his work can be identified by its complexity its diatonic aspect its harmony with limited transposition its colour and its additive rhythms. He composed many works related to ornithology and birdsong including the 'Bird Catalogue' in 7 volumes.
