Piano Works Volume I-To mark the 150th anniversary of Debussy?s birth in 2012 Henle are proud to present a tribute to his piano solo works in three volumes available as a paperbound or a clothbound edition. As a publishing house whose main focus ison piano music it was important for Henle to give a special place to the works of Claude Debussy the innovator of piano style. Thus since the early 1980s they have steadily been publishing single editions of all of Debussy?simportant works for the piano. Le Petit Negre was originally composed by Claude Debussy (1862-1918) in 1909. The purpose was to write a great work that could also played by children. Jan Merry made the piece even more accessible at the beginning of the 20th Century by arranging it for Flute and Piano. Le Petit Negre is marked Allegro and begins with a theme modelled on ragtime music a style which was very popular at the time of composition. Jazz influences the C major key signature 2/4 meter and upbeat features make for an exciting and accessible piece for all flautists and pianists. Merry's arrangement ofDebussy's Le Petit Negre is a thrilling addition to the repertoire.

Claude Debussy (1862-1918) was a French composer who is often associated with the early Impressionist movement. The Golliwog’s Cakewalk is taken from a suite of works inspired by Debussy’s daughter and her toys. The cakewalk was a popular dance in the 1890’s and 1900’s andis reflected in the syncopated ragtime style.The Girl With Flaxen Hair is taken from Debussy’s first book of preludes. Its title character is inspired by a poem about a Scottish maiden who is supposed tosymbolise tranquillity and simplicity aspects which are reflected in both the melody and harmony.

This version of the famous piece Le Petit Nègre by Claude Debussy is a version transcribed for Bb Clarinet and Piano by Auguste Périer a professor at the Paris Conservatoire. First published in 1909 the piece in C major starts “Allegro giusto” and is an energetic cakewalk with an introduction followed by the main theme which is repeated before the piece comes to a close. This really charming work would suit an upper-intermediate level or above and is perfect to start working on Debussy’s music.
