Claude Debussy had difficulties finishing his last major work the Sonata for Violin and Piano. This can be seen in the many drafts which have been handed down and the fact that the cycle for which it was conceived was left unfinished. The work originated under the impact of Debussy’s progressing illness as well as the First World War.The first edition published during the final year of Debussy’s life contains many rhythmic errors. Claude Debussy (1862-1918) was a French composer who is often associated with the early Impressionist movement. He is best known for his evocative Piano compositions from which these Two Pieces For ClarinetAnd Piano have been transcribed. The Golliwog’s Cakewalk is taken from a suite of works inspired by Debussy’s daughter and her toys. The cakewalk was a popular dance in the 1890’s and 1900’s andis reflected in the syncopated ragtime style.The Girl With Flaxen Hair is taken from Debussy’s first book of preludes. Its title character is inspired by a poem about a Scottish maiden who is supposed tosymbolise tranquillity and simplicity aspects which are reflected in both the melody and harmony.

Single Edition From Hn 404-This piece is straightforward in its construction but highly advanced in its harmonies and links up with the widely popular 19th-century tradition of the “night piece” or “nocturne” forpiano.Its themes and modulations are highly reminiscent of Gabriel Fauré but in its chromatic voice-leading and unusual treatment of metre – such as in the 7/4 central section – Debussy makes a statementall of his own. Nothing is known about the history of its composition.Debussy’s 1892 contract with his publisher states merely that the composer had originally called it “Interlude” but then decided uponthe far more suitable title of “Nocturne”. One of Debussy’s most popular early piano works it is now available in a Henle Urtext edition.

In his youth when still searching for his own personal style Debussy composed a series of short stand-alone piano pieces. He took traditional genres such as the ballade mazurka nocturne and waltz but in general used each ofthem just once as if trying them out. One such was the ?Valse romantique? published by Choudens of Paris in 1891 and thus written at the same time as his famous piano works Two Arabesques and the Suite bergamasque. This charmingwaltz is of moderate difficulty and thus ideal either as a pedagogical piece or for concert performance.
