Trois Esquisses Symphoniques-Claude Debussy's La Mer is an impressionistic work through and through. The three symphonic sketches that make up the work were composed between 1903-1905 however Debussy refined this work up until at least 1913. These corrections are found in a score which the composer gave to his wife as a present for her private library in 1913.The new scholarly-critical edition draws on several important sources previously unavailable to musicologists resulting in an array of new readings and corrections. In addition there are many changes especially in terms of articulation and dynamics.This new edition includes the famous ?fanfare? inMovement III clearly marked in small print and brackets. This fanfare was excised in the 1910 reissue of the work but was reinstated by a number of great conductors who knew Debussy i.e. Monteux Münch Mitropoulos and Ansermet. They felt that the excision was a misunderstanding and that the fanfare was necessary for the structure of the movement. Arranged in 2011 it was then premiered by the Radio KamerFilharmonie conducted by Michael Schønwandt in Utrecht in February2012. Debussy’s six movement work for piano has been cherished the world over for its whimsical charm and the way in which they are evocative of childhood. Abrahamsen expands on these traits in his orchestration of the six little masterpieces; be it the mystical heaviness of Jimbo’s Lullaby the icy pirouettes in The Snow is Dancing or the buoyant ending: Golliwogg’s Cakewalk

3 Symphonic Sketches-'Maybe you don't know that I was intended for the fine career of a sailor…' was what Debussy wrote in a letter in which he tells about his work on La Mer. His passion for the sea remained despite his different career and brought him to compose the three symphonic sketches for orchestra. The initially conservative criticism of La Mer which can probably be attributed to the difference in style compared to the successful work 'Pelléas' could be reversed through a performance directed by Debussy in 1908 with overwhelming success.

Pour l'adorateur de Debussy que je suis depuis la plus rendre enfance, toucher à ces merveilles que sont les Préludes de Claude Debussy fut un cas de conscience. Le séduisant quatuor avec flûte, avec son trio à cordes, permet à un orchestrateur de métier d'infin ies nuances et dégradés : quatre instruments virtuoses, souvent polyphoniques, aux nombreuses irisations de timbre... Cependant, nous n'avons aucun modèle chez Debussy lui-même d'un tel travail, sinon son Quatuor à cordes (très antérieur) et sa Sonate pour flûte, alto et... harpe ! Sans ajouter une harpe (qui possède l'étendue du piano), impossible d'imaginer La Cathédrale Engloutie ou La Terrasse des audiences du clair de lune ... les résonances graves du piano, si poétiques, quasi magiques, ne pourraient être traduites par quatre instruments non résonants. J'ai donc dû choisir peu de Préludes, ne voulant pas trahir Debussy. Après une écoute intérieure très exigeante, et en me permettant, à la rigueur, quelques brèves octaviations de l'extrême-grave du piano, je me suis limité à six, trois dans chaque livre: 1er livre : - Des Pas sur la neige (n° 6) - La Sérénade interrompue (n° 9) - Minstrels (n° 12) 2e livre: - Bruyères (n°5) - Hommage à Sir Pickwick PPMPC (n° 9) - Canope (n° 10) Très vite, j'ai compris que partir du son-piano était une erreur; il valait mieux imaginer le Debussy des années 1910 orchestrant ces pièces pour une grande formation (du type Ibéria ou Jeux), puis réduire pour un petit orchestre de quatre instruments. D'où l'emploi de batteries (même à la flûte), de trémolos, de doublures étranges pour simuler les timbres absents, créer des illusions de polyphonie, si prisées des orchestrateurs français. J'espère n'en avoir pas abusé; j'ai essayé de mettre dans ces transcriptions toute l'imagination - tous les sons improbables - que Debussy aurait lui-même recherchés. For Orchestra With Solo Clarinet In B-Flat-Debussy’s Première Rhapsodie is one of two concertante works completed premiered and published during his lifetime. He was commissioned to write it in 1909 for the final examination at the Paris Conservatoire in 1910. Debussy orchestrated it in the summer of 1911. While transferring the clarinet part from the already published version for clarinet and piano he made a few subtle changes particularly in m. 201 which has been a bone of contention among clarinettists for over a century.The present scholarly-critical publication is the first Urtext edition of the orchestral version.
