Sing, Choirs! is a library in miniature. It contains many of the Christian church's popular traditional anthems, including at least one example that will be suitable for each of the major services of the year. A number of Anglican chants (Psalms, Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis) are included, set out in a way that should enable those who are unfamiliar with the style to perform them easily. The selection of movements from the Mass can be used to enrich the music of the liturgy in services. Many of the works in Sing, Choirs! are presented in their original form, such as Bruckner's Locus Iste and Mozart's Laudate Dominum . KV 339-We know that Mozart held his Vespers in high regard since he once asked his father in a letter dated 12 March 1783 to send the two works to him in Vienna so that he could show them to Baron Gottfried van Swieten. The Office hymns designated as Vesperae de Dominica K. 321 and Vesperae Solennes De Confessore K. 339 both call for four Vocal parts two Violins two Clarinets Timpani Basses (Violoncello Double Bass and Bassoon) three Trombones and Organ. They contain settings of Psalms 109 (Dixit) 110 (Confitebor) 111 (Beatus vir) 112 (Laudate pueri) 116 (Laudate Dominum) and of the Magnificat canticle. Each of the Psalms forms an autonomousunit; the Doxology at the end is derived from the themes of the various Psalms. In his use of authentic Englsh folksongs Gnostic texts and Vedic hymns one can discern Holst’s search for a compositional Voice beyond the constraints of the European canon in the early 1900’s.
