A collection of solo songs by Einari Marvia (1915-97) edited by Matti Tuloisela. As many as 11 songs are here published for the first time. Einari Marvia contributed about a hundred solo songs to the Finnish Lied tradition established by Yrjo Kilpinen but drew his musical influences more from his teacher, Erkki Melartin, than from Kilpinen. Marvia turned for inspiration to ancient Finnish folk poetry and the nature lyrics of Finnish poets. His songs are characterised by rich musical, melodic invention enhanced by colourful, distinctive harmonies. The texts are taken from a number of sources, which proves that he read widely and was familiar with poetry. Tarascone; Tarantella Capuanese; Valzer; Polka di Vittorio; Tarantella StiglianeseThe history of the Viggianesi, strolling musicians, winds over a period of about four centuries and esprimeun ‘unicum’ musically and anthropologically. Heirs of a travelling musical tradition that from the late Middle Ages inhabited more than just the streets of the Kingdom of Sicily and Naples, the harpists of this extraordinary story made their first appearances as early as the end of the 1600s engaged in musical practices at shrines.Armed with an urgent need to make a living together with a strong musical inclination, adaptability and versatility, the groups of musicians, almost always belonging to the same family circle, became the promoters of the great Italian musical tradition (Southern in particular), and with their harps on their shoulders they became the identification symbol of a well-defined and limited area of Italy: the Agri Valley, in Basilicata. From the many documents examined, a very wide and varied musical repertoire emerges mixing the pastoral tradition with classical tradition (mainly opera, devotional music with songs from the cities (from the Neapolitan tradition to international production). The pastoral repertoire, the subject of this publication, consists of a strongly characterized native repertoire which the Viggianesi had consolidated in both public and private ritual occasions in their native land, even if performing in distant lands. This collection is included among the compulsory pieces of The 7th International Harp Contest in Italy Suoni D’Arpa, 2017, Category A – Associazione Italiana dell’Arpa – www.associazioneitalianarpa.it

Similar in concept to its predecessor, The Living Last Supper (55/1110L), this unique presentation of the Christmas story is seen through the eyes of those who witnessed the first Christmas in Bethlehem many years ago. There are brief monologues for ten characters--ranging from Mary and Joseph to members of the Innkeeper's family--interspersed among the seven songs. (Also included are character descriptions, set and staging suggestions, and hints for wardrobe and props). The music is Ruth Elaine Schram at her best: beautiful melodies, thoughtful texts, well-crafted part writing-and includes familiar carols with possible congregational participation. The optional orchestration demands are modest, making it possible for the use of live instruments even on a limited budget. An Accompaniment CD is also available, if desired. The Living Light is flexible and accessible enough to appeal to and be within the capabilities of most music ministry programs.

Writing these arrangements, Frank Reinshagen has created little masterpieces, which broaden the rhythmical and harmonic context of the original tunes in an interesting manner without detracting from their archaic and melancholic character. These original tunes are---in a direct or wider sense---of Celtic origin, in other words, they have been borrowed from the Irish, Scottish and Gaelic musical tradition. These through-composed arrangements are rather easy to perform from the rhythmical and technical point of view. Yet, they are quite demanding in respect of the key they are written in, their intonation and, especially, their interpretation. Their different instrumentations are fully compatible with each other and, due to their overall structure, they are also suitable to be played with multi-scored parts. Annotation on Aignish on the Machair. The arrangement of Aignish on the Machair illustrates, above all, the melancholic character inherent in the harmonies of the original tune. A short rubato passage is followed by several variations over the flowing melody in 3/4- time. The short triplet passages embedded in these variations are quite demanding from the technical point of view; considering the key they are written in, however, these passages are not too difficult to play.
