Carmen is the best known work by the French composer Georges Bizet (1838-1875). Criticised by the French public at the time of its creation because its plot was deemed indecent, the opera nevertheless came to be considered as a major work due to its captivating melodies, Spanish character and energetic rhythms. From Bizet's Carmen Suite #2, this setting of the familiar dance theme is scored so that the chromatic melody lies exceedingly well for young strings. Daniel Schnyder wrote the Carmen Suite as an opera paraphrase for a dance performance featuring the flamenco dancer Nina Corti and the Carmina Quartet. Later, I adapted the work for piano trio. This music, based on the most famous opera, is perfectly suited for dance performances. The instrumental interludes create opportunities for direct interactions between musicians and dancers.
