for recorder ensemble-A collection of dances from the mid 16th Century believed to have originally been performed in the court of Henry VIII. This edition is intended for consort of recorders however can also be performed by a selection of other renaissance instruments such as flutes shawms or viols or mixed consorts such as cornetts and sackbuts. A simple percussion part can also be added.

Score-Johnnie Vinson has expertly adapted two movements from this well-known suite by Peter Warlock based on 16th-century dance music. 'Basse-Dance' is a stately and moderate tempo dance in 3/4 while 'Mattachins' is an energetic sword dance in 2/4. The unique stylings and at times unusual harmonies have been preserved in these delightful setting for beginning players. (2:20)

Fifteen of the easiest pieces have been selected from the twentieth-century repertoire. Six of these do not exceed the compass of a fifth. We have deliberately omitted pieces from works which should, without fail, be included in all piano teaching, Bartók's 'Mikrokosmos' and 'For Children'. With their attractive melodies and simple and organised structure of rhythm and harmony, the pieces in this selection prove that access to contemporary music can be made easy even for the beginner.

John Luther Adams' Five Athabascan Dances for Harp and Percussion. Duration: 16 minutes. 'These pieces are inspired by the music and spirit of the Athabascan people ofAlaska's boreal forest. The first and third dances are based on songs by Joe Beetus a Koyukon elder from the village of Huslia. The second dance is based on a short traditional song of the Dena'ingpeople of the Kenai Peninsula as remembered by the late Peter Kalifornsky and transcribed by the late Thomas F. Johnston. In their original setting these melodies would be sung in unison with no harmony orcounterpoint. Working as a composer in the Western tradition I have extended and transformed them in many ways. I have 'borrowed' and 'set' these melodies with permission and with the hope that my treatment ofthem conveys my profound respect for their origins. The second and third pieces are derived from my setting of poems by Adeline Peter Raboff written in the dialect of her Gwich'in people who inhabit the countryfrom Arctic Village to Old Crow. I offer this music as a gesture of respect to the first peoples of the Northern Interior and the Kenai Peninsula.' - John Luther Adams

Kevin Volans' String Quartet No. 9: Shiva Dances was commissioned by BBC Radio 3 and first performed by the Smith Quartet at the 2004 Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival.Kevin Volans (the composer) notes on the piece:In the past I have been interested in trying to go beyond historicism (1970s) beyond style(1980s) and beyond form (1990s) in my work. Looking back over the music of the twentiethcentury I was struck by the fact the nearlyall of it is extremely 'busy' almost cluttered. Italmost seemed that composers felt compelled to look industrious. In the new millennium Ithought it would be interesting to try and eliminate content. I also aspired to movingfrommusic (sound as art) to art (art as sound). This of course has already been done by a numberof composers (many from New York Phil Niblock and La Monte Young to name but two) butit was something I had never tried.AlthoughI found it annoying that the label 'minimalist' was given to my African-based work and fearing this would make the label stick I set out to write a piece which reflected my loveof minimal painting and architecture. The Japanesehave a term 'wabi' meaning 'voluntarypoverty' or 'emptiness' to describe their restrained minimal aesthetic an aesthetic which however pays greatest attention to the quality of material and fine detail. I like to think thatthelack of excessive pitch material in this piece reflects a kind of voluntary poverty.When Shiva is portrayed dancing (as Nataraj) He is depicted in a circle of flames crushing asmall figure the ego underfoot.You get theimpression He dances on the spot not movingaround at all.
