Miguel Llobet's famous Catalan plucked string orchestra called the 'Lira Orfeo' was active in Barcelona from 1899-1906. Here we present a new engraving of all the surviving original scores, set in the same performing score format in which they were originally used 120 years ago. The Lira Orfeo quickly became an important part of Barcelona's cultural scene; with Tárrega as its honorary president the Lira Orfeo society was founded in 1898 and an official inaugural concert, shared between Manuel Burgés (pno) and Miguel Llobet (gtr) took place in Barcelona in 1898. The aim of the society was to offer a full musical education, both theoretical and instrumental, for guitarists and players of other plucked instrument family, with eventually with a place in its Catalan plucked instrument orchestra of the same name. The teachers for guitar were Miguel Llobet, Pedro Lloret and Domingo Prat. Prominent musicians such as Manuel Burgés and Baldomera Cateura were also on the teaching staff. Classes were given three times a week, and as the players were mainly amateurs with day jobs, these took place in the evening and often went on until 2 o'clock in the morning. The debut of the orchestra took place in 1903 and it gave regular concerts at top venues right up to the society's dissolution in 1907, mainly due to lack of funding. For the instruments used see the list of works below. The repertoire is varied, selected, arranged by Miguel Llobet it was mainly drawn from traditional and impressionist Iberian music, as well as the German classics, it includes a specially commissioned work Triomphe d'Orphée' by the famous Catalán pianist Manuel Burgés. We at Guitar Heritage are proud to present the first publication of this huge cultural contribution to music in its original form and prepared from the source manuscripts which were the work of Miguel Llobet. The edition has many illustrations, rare documents and photographs as well as a comprehensive critical commentary by Stefano Grondona - whose knowledge of Miguel Llobet, as well as of Catalonian culture, has made an edition of this scope possible. These arrangements are superb and presented as they originally were in the same score form. The now relatively rare instruments called for can be replaced by suitable alternatives - this is ideal and interesting material for adapting to guitar orchestra/ensemble or mandolin orchestra, or similar.

This piece was originally written for Violin and Piano, and if the 'New World' Symphony and the 'American' String Quartet are the best-known products of AntonÃn Dvorak's years in the United States, the little Sonatina in G major (sometimes called the 'Indian Lament' Sonatina) may well be the most obscure; yet it is a charming work that deserves better than its relegation to the learning books of young violinists. The Sonatina is in four movements: Allegro risoluto , Larghetto , Scherzo (molto vivace) , and Allegro .

On the workWritten originally for swing band in the 1970's in a work called A Minor Excursion I chose a rather bland tune for this suite. What originally brought this work alive was the improvisation and variation of the tune. Therefore this suite is a set of variations on the opening movement and I did this in homage to the original work. For me it's the following movements which make the work. The Prelude is just a simple statement of the theme with a small middle eight section which hints at the work's origin as a jazz piece. The rest of the movements grow from the opening and explores the Prelude in various ways. This is really jazz meets symphonic development. The theme can be clearly heard in all the movements but as the work reaches its conclusion the theme becomes more and more fragmented. The first performance was given on 20 November 1993 at Saint Edmund's Church, Village Way, Beckenham, Kent by the Bromley Oecumenical Singers and Orchestra, conducted by Tomas Creagh-Fuller. (Adrian Connell)Duration: 15 minutes.

Suitable for concert or worship (esp. All Saints) 1111; 2221; timp, perc, hp, cel; stgs Duration: 30'15 Text: adapted from the New Testament by Jane Griner Published by: Dunstan House Also available for sale: Two churches, one Presbyterian, one Methodist, located in two adjacent states, wanted to commission a major work for chorus and orchestra to use in a memorial service held annually near the feast of All Saints, but felt that, considering the costs involved in hiring an orchestra for the performance, they couldn’t also afford the commissioning fee which an extended work would necessitate. Composer Daniel E. Gawthrop put the two directors in touch with each other, and a joint commission was conceived. Originally, the plan called for two completely separate premières, one at each church, but as the directors consulted on musical matters they decided that it would add an element of ecumenism and outreach to the project if they joined the two choirs together for both performances. Accordingly, on the first of the two Sundays the South Carolina Presbyterians joined the North Carolina Methodists in their Sunday morning services to sing the première of Behold This Mystery. On the following Sunday the travel was reversed for the second première. The involved choirs, congregations, clergy and directors all declared the project a triumph. Further performances followed, and the piece has now earned a place in the small but distinguished category called Twentieth Century Extended Works for Chorus and Orchestra Which Have Received More Than One Performance. Behold This Mystery is suitable anywhere that you might program a requiem, e.g., either in concert or within the context of a worship service. It lasts about 27 minutes in performance. Soprano and Baritone soloists are called for, although a Tenor may be substituted for the (rather high) Baritone part if needed. The choral parts are not terribly difficult but this is an extended work, probably equivalent to five or six typical anthems. Instrumental parts are not virtuosic; collegiate and professional ensembles should have no trouble preparing the piece with only a few rehearsals. Minimum order quantity: 8 copies. Perusal copies are available by contacting office@DunstanHouse.com (include the organization name with your request). To order quantities fewer than 8.

A lot is known about the American composer Leroy Anderson. This son of Swedish immigrants played the piano, organ, accordion, trombone, tuba and double bass. He spoke several languages fluently and graduated from Harvard with first-class honours. While on military service, the army also commissioned him to write a manual on Icelandic grammar. He already started writing musical arrangements as a student, and from his 30th year arranged and composed for the Boston Pops Orchestra. Such melodiesas Serenata, The Typewriter, Sleigh Ride and Buglers Holiday made him world famous. His best-known work, Blue Tango, reached number one in the US charts in 1952, and it sold more than a million copies. In 1975, a year after hisdeath, he was given a star at the Walk of Fame in Hollywood. Most of his works last no longer than three minutes, about the maximum length of a single at that time. One work that lasts longer is his 1953 Piano Concerto in C for piano and orchestra. The first performance was in Chicago, conducted by the composer and with Eugene List at the piano. However, after three performances he was no longer happy with the work and withdrew it. He always intended to revise it, but never got round to it. Itwas only in 1989 that the Anderson family decided to republish the work. This three-part composition is on the one hand characterised by a careless elegance, but on the other one can hear the influence of Rachmaninoff, Copland, Gershwin, and evenBeethoven and Mozart, as well as the Viennese classics.Anderson used the sonata form for the first movement. It ends with a cadenza that carries us on into the second part (in e minor). The third part is a typically cheerful American folk dance in2/4 time, a so-called Hoe Down, with a lilting, lyrical passage as its middle section. At the end comes a solo passage followed by a rapid close. In this piano concerto, Anderson combines a rigidly classical form of composition with simple andappealing themes and elements from light music. So this work is a perfect synthesis of light music and what is called serious music, in the same way as Gershwins Rhapsody in Blue. A work that can be played equally well in a concerthall, at an open-air concert or even a pop concert. Michael Larkin's gentle anthem of comfort is based on Isaiah 43:1 - 4. The luscious choral textures are supported by a decorative piano accompaniment, making this an accessible piece for choirs of all abilities. The text appears in Lutheran Service Book's Three-Year Lectionary, Series C, as the Old Testament Reading for the Baptism of Our Lord. The piece also makes a wonderful anthem for baptisms and confirmations.
Do not be afraid, for I have redeemed you.I have called you by your name, and you are Mine.Do not be afraid, for you are Mine.
When you pass through deep waters the waves will not cover you. When you pass through the fire the flames will not touch you.The flames will not touch you.Do not be afraid, for I have redeemed you.I have called you by your name, and you are Mine. For I am the Lord your God; you are precious in My sight.
I love you with a perfect love.I love you with a perfect love, a perfect love.

The Christmas oratorio Die Geburt Christi op. 90 was first performed in 1894 in the St. Thomas Church in Strassburg and today it has been rediscovered. It is the first of a trio of so-called church oratorios by Brahms's friend, Heinrich von Herzogenberg. It was followed by Die Passion op. 93 and Erntefeier op. 104, all of which have been published by Carus in reprints of earlier editions. With these works which are partly neo-baroque, partly late romantic choral works, Herzogenberg commits himself to a new form of the Protestant worship service characterized by a high artistic level, but still near to the congregation. Allowing the choir to be accompanied by instruments outside the closed liturgical form of the service goes back to a concept of the theologian from Strasbourg, Friedrich Spitta. Since Christmas was a good occasion for the choir to perform independently, Spitta decided to put together the text for a Christmas oratorio and to commission Herzogenberg to realize it musically. For many years, I have been repeatedly asked by solo guitarists and guitar duos to write pieces for them. The Aleph Guitar Quartet and I have finally brought it off! The piece is called Der entkommene Orpheus (The Escaped Orpheus). In the old equal rights movement everything was treated as equally as possible, right from the beginning. The tones felt democratically happy. Only discontent found cause to complain. It ultimately hated this complex explicitness. The meaning, also in cases of definite tendencies in the piece, should never be able to lead a definite life. This piece, naturally, is just a tiny contribution! In the myth, Orpheus even enchanted stones and trees, turned around too soon to look at his beloved Eurydice (just think of the punctuality fanatic Schonberg - at least according to Richard Buhlig), refused the service of Dionysus - and he, who had plucked the strings of the lyre his whole life long, was now himself torn up by the Thracian Maenads as a punishment. But his head and his lyre floated over the sea and landed on Lesbos. A string is a string is a side!!!Like a coded word, this text is placed at the service of the varied role of the organiser of New Music. Like an equation. Shouldn't an organiser ever actually turn around towards a lover, so that the Furies of present-day responsibility do not drive him into a state of inner conflict?Nicolaus A.
