Par . The musical appeal of the Blues, as they began to be heard in the early twentieth century, was so infectious that musicians with open minds and ears were drawn to it as soon as they heard it. And that appeal crossed the racial and ethnic divides that characterized American society. So it was, that even before African American guitarists were recorded playing fingerstyle blues guitar, their white neighbors had already begun learning the music?listening to, watching, and imitating the musicians whose music they so admired. And what these white musicians ended up expressing in their own playing and singing was not simply imitation, but their own reconfiguration of what their models did, played in accordance with their own senses of rhythm, phrasing and how to sing the music.In Hillbilly Fingerstyle Blues Guitar, author John Miller offers transcriptions, in tablature and standard notation, of twenty-eight pieces by these white fingerstyle blues players, taken from recordings made in the period 1926?1970. Many of the solos are to be played in the first position with a few in the third and higher positions. All of the solos in this collection are presented in standard notation and tab. Students should read the standard notation as much as their reading skills will allow as that is where the rhythmic notation is contained, but the tab will allow any student to play the solos in higher positions where many beginners find reading challenging. Many of the solos have techniques written such as slides, 1/4 step bends (a very slight bend), and grace notes. These are simple techniques to execute and can be mimicked by listening to the play-along recording if the student does not read these techniques in standard notation. A professional band has recorded each tune on the accompanying play-along CD. This will help students hear the groove of the tune and how each piece should be phrased. Fingerpicking Blues Guitar is a never ending study full of surprises and discoveries. Each key of the Guitar offers new sounds and textures. A blues played in the key of C sounds world's apart from a blues played in the keys of A G D or E. This series focuses on a single key for each lesson. The key of G offers specific advantages. It is ideal for the alternating bass technique i.e. Mississippi John Hurt's style of playing. In this lesson we start by learning an arrangement of Marshall Owens' 1930s recording of Try Me One More Time. This was originally played in an Open G tuning but is here arranged in standard tuning using a JohnHurt approach. Not all blues from the 1920s and 1930s were fingerpicked. Jim Jackson was a popular Memphis songster who basically strummed his Guitar. But his repertoire was full of wonderful songs. Stefan Grossman has taken his Wild About My Loving and has tried to keep the original feel by combining a strum approach intermingled with fingerpicking the melody. Little Hat Jones was an amazing fingerstyle bluesman. His Bye Bye Baby Blues was played in the key of G. Here his version is fully transcribed note for note. Blind Boy Fuller recorded many blues in the key of G. In this lesson we'll tackle three of his arrangements: Baby Let Me Lay It On You Baby Quit Your Low Down Ways and I Crave My Pigmeat. We study his playing note for note but also explore variations. By the end of this lesson you will know six great tunes and have an insight in to fingerpicking blues in the key of G.
