Score-Commissioned by the Michigan State University Alumni Band this three movement work by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Karel Husa was the winner of the first Louis Sudler International Wind Band Composition Competition in 1983.Previously available only in rental we are proud to offer this important work for publication.A note from the composer: Divided into three movements this work is a display of virtuoso passages given to solo instrumentsas well as to the groups of the ensemble. In the Fanfare of the first movement the brass section “concertizes” in groups of four brass quintets (2 trumpets horn trombone and tuba or baritone) spread from left toright in back. The saxophones (S A T B) are placed in front of the brass quintets and the woodwinds occupy the front of the stage with percussion on the left and right side. These groups like the brass quintets play in theconcertante style particularly in the first and last movements. At the same time each movement contains individual solo passages (for example timpani and flute in Movement I – “Drum Ceremony” andEnglish horn and other low woodwinds in Movement II – “Elegy”). The composition of this piece was prompted by the excellence of wind and percussion players today and by the incredible growth of wind ensembles orchestras and bands in the last 25 years. It is intended for their enjoyment.

For Concert Wind band and Pre-recorded-Alex Shapiro first brought electroacoustic music – paired with using an everyday object as an instrument – to middle school bands with her 2010 piece PAPER CUT. Now comes ROCK MUSIC possibly the very first geo-electroacoustic minimalist band piece largely devoid of melody and of rhythm. Conceptual and atmospheric the music features compelling textures from instruments voices and rocks that weave a wind band into a piece of sonic fabric stretched across linear time. As the notes slowlycrawl melt and scrape over a sonic landscape in random irregular ways were connected to the ancient glaciers which carved the world we know and which we strive to protect. Like PAPER CUT ROCK MUSIC can be equally appreciated by mature bandsand their audiences as well. To perform ROCK MUSIC youll need an audio system capable of playing the prerecorded audio tracks from a laptop computer via a small digital audio interface connected to an audio mixer. This stately concert opener was originally written by Jan Van der Roost for a special event in which six respected wind orchestras (two Belgian and four Dutch) of different composition (two symphonic bands two fanfare bands and two brass bands) were featured during six concerts. Each evening brought forth a performance by a symphonic band a fanfare and brass band so that the audience could experience all three types of ensembles. This was indeed an original concept.The name ConZEnSus comes from a combination of the words ‘Concert Cyclus’ (concert series) and ‘zes’ (Dutch for ‘six’). This leads to a new word which refers to ‘consensus’. The general tenor of the cycle isthus immediately indicated. The richness of color of the various ensembles is revealed through an open and friendly atmosphere. During all six concerts (over a span of three years) ConZEnSus functioned as a permanent opening number for each orchestra. Thus the same musical story was portrayed in three different packages.

Bring the house down with Jerry Bensman's sparkling Footprints. Everyone is or at least feels important in this simple but very effective march which works equally well on stage as on parade. Often a march does not have to be difficult to possess a thorougly pleasing 'full' sound. In understanding this Jerry Bensman added a valuable repertoire-piece to the music available for youth-bands. In performing Footprints your beginning bandsmen take a major step forward in advancing their budding musical careers.
