Bach C.p.e. - Sonata A Minor For Flute Solo Wq 132/h 562 - Flute

Written in 1747 while C P E Bach was in Berlin probably for his then employer Frederick the Great or for Frederick's teacher J J Quantz this work was not printed until 1763. Like his father J S Bach C P E Bach chose the key of A minor for his only compositon for solo Flute but it's structure is quite different to that of Bach senior. Like J. S. Bach's Partita in A minor (BWV 1013) the sonata edited here is considered one of the most important works for solo Flute of the eighteenth century. In contrast to J. S. Bach's composition which still represents the traditional polyphonic and figurative style the work of the youngBach displays great sensitivity and occasionally an almost romantic expressiveness. This new edition of C. P. E. Bach's Sonata in A minor is based on a copy in the anthology 'Musikalisches Mancherley'; the editor owes his thanks to the Zurrich Central Library.

The new two-volume edition of Wiener Urtext Edition contains C. P. E. Bach's complete works for harpsichord (piano) obbligato and violin. Vol. 1 contains not only the sonatas Wq 71-74 and BWV 1036 but also the arrangements of the trios Wq 143-145 for violin and harpsichord, most of which are included in C. P. E. Bach's autographs, as well as a - previously ignored - early version of Wq 71 which, like BWV 1036, grants a rare insight into the early works of the composer. Vol. 2 contains the four major sonatas of 1763 which already fascinated Johannes Brahms. Brahms not only played them in concert, together with Joseph Hellmesberger, but also published two of these sonatas in 1864. This volume concludes with the two late works 'Arioso' and 'Fantasie' of 1781 and 1787 respectively. With these works, C. P. E.
